‘AEW: Dynamite’ Review (Feb 2nd 2022)
Welcome to this review of AEW: Dynamite which emanates from Chicago, home of CM Punk. We’ve got a bunch of highly anticipated matches on this card and someone very nice, very evil making his second appearance!
Match #1: Jon Moxley def. Wheeler Yuta
My Thoughts: This was a last-minute change to this weeks card after Brian Kendrick was pulled from the show following the controversy that arose on social media regarding his signing. And guess what? Wheeler Yuta pulled one out of the bag and gave a fantastic performance against Moxley. He looked a lot better and he wrestled on another level compared to what we’ve seen before. A brilliant opening match.
My Score: 3 out of 5
Match #2: Brody King and Malakai Black def. Penta El Zero Miedo and PAC
My Thoughts: If there were ever wrestlers you could say will ALWAYS deliver great matches it’s these four guys. Which is why this match was oh so good! Penta, PAC and Black always seem to perfectly balance skill with aggression which makes their matches so fun to watch. This was a banger!
My Score: 3.5 out of 5
Match #3: Nyla Rose def. Ruby Soho
My Thoughts: Ruby Soho is having far too much fun in AEW, and I say that with good intentions. She’s having so much fun it seems to be impacting her performance in the ring at times and she seems to tend to lose the important matches. Someone like Soho should’ve had this one in the bag, instead Nyla got the definitive win – getting the pin after a weird almost botch-like miss of the No Future from Ruby Soho. I know Ruby’s relatively new to the company but she was positioned as a big deal on her debut and her booking seems to be going the other way.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5
Match #4: MJF def. CM Punk
My Thoughts: Well this was one hell of a match! MJF used every dirty trick in the book to EVENTUALLY get the win… I say eventually as this, IMHO, has to be one of the best uses of a false finish I’ve seen in a long time. The fact that, for a minute, the audience thought Punk lost, then got excited when the match was restarted, then lost to MJF cheating with the Diamond ring (again) was one hell of a storytelling journey. And, with the restart, this went 40 minutes but never felt that long. The proverbial cherry on top of a fantastic episode of Dynamite!
My Score: 4 out of 5
News of the Night:
- Bryan Danielson proposed a team-up between him and Mox to takeover AEW.
- Dan Lambert is now apparently feuding with Brandi Rhodes.
- Jericho demanded a meeting of the Inner Circle next week.
Final Verdict: 4.5/5
What can you say about this episode? One of the best, most well put together episodes of Dynamite we’ve had this year IMHO. Good promos, good matches, what else can you ask for?
