Top 5: Outfits that programmers wear to work

by James Smith

1. (The Bogus) Suit and Tie:

This is the most popular outfit amongst programmers. Unfortunately, it’s also the most bogus outfit. The reason why this isn’t really considered a programmer outfit at all is because nearly all programmers make fun of people who wear the suit and tie to work. There are three main reasons for this reaction by other programmers:

  • The person wearing a suit doesn’t look like he or she is ready for action. Someone who is dressed in a suit looks like they would prefer to stay in one place all day and not be pushed around.
  • Suits make programmers uncomfortable because they may remind them of working in an office rather than at home, where most programmers work.

2. “Attire to Impress”:

This outfit is very popular amongst interviewers and the like. It consists of a button-up shirt, pressed pants or skirt, and usually also includes a tie (for men) or scarf (for women). Since most programmers don’t like distractions when working, this outfit might be seen as too ostentatious when in the actual work environment.

3. “The Nerd Look”:

This outfit consists of jeans, T-shirts with slogans and designs and maybe even a pocket protector for your pens. All told, it’s an easy way to look nerdy regardless of gender.

4. “Casual Friday” Outfit:

For most programmers casual Friday means dressing up just slightly more than they do for work. This outfit usually consists of slacks, a dress shirt and maybe even tie depending on the work setting. “The Casual Look”: This outfit is when a programmer dresses down from their normal attire. Jeans and a t-shirt is the most common, but sweats with sweat socks or even shorts can be worn depending on your work environment. At the end of the day everyone needs to wear clothes in order to go outside, but programmers have more freedom when it comes to what they wear at work than many other programminggeeks.

5. “Jeans and a T-shirt”:

This is the outfit of choice for many programmers, especially those who work from home. This allows them to be comfortable while also expressing themselves through their fashion sense. It’s common for some people to wear this outfit every day of the week instead of having different clothing options for work and play.

Conclusion

The most important thing to consider when choosing what you’re going to wear for work is to think about the type of environment that your workplace is in. If it’s a more creative environment then you would be fine dressing down and wearing jeans and a t-shirt all week, but if you want to make an impression with your employer and co-workers then dress up like the “attire to impress” example above.
