‘AEW: Dark’ Review (Aug 24th 2021)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this weeks review of AEW: Dark, which emanates from the Union Center in Chicago… Yes, the same venure CM Punk made his AEW debut on Friday!

Match #1: Thunder Rosa def. Heather Reckless

My Thoughts: Heather Reckaless makes her AEW debut in another of the now all-too-familiar Thunder Rosa quasi-squash matches. Kudos to Rosa for letting all these women have a spot to show themselves in the best light and show off some of their skillset… and she can still appear on Dynamite as an ass-kicking main eventer!

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #2: Varsity Blonds def. Ren Jones & Brayden Lee

My Thoughts: Another squash match, although I honestly don’t mind when the Varsity Blonds get to squash their opponents. Why? Well it makes them look strong – and nowhere did the duo look stronger than when Griff Garrison caught Brayden Lee with what looked to be a stiff kick! Still this was your usual AEW quasi-squash but one that I’m all for more of!

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #3: Powerhouse Hobbs def. Shawn Dean

My Thoughts: Awwww shit. Shawn Dean can’t get a break can he? Despite some early offence Dean was demolished by Hobbs in less than a minute. Good job Dean has a second job in AEW!

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #4: Dante Martin def. Alan ‘5’ Angels

My Thoughts: Now this was a great match. Dante Martin never diasppoints and Alan Angels made for another great opponent for the high flying youngster. Slowly but surely Angels is getting more and more of a spotlight and I’m here for it.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #5: Lucha Bros def. Aaron Solo & Nick Comoroto

My Thoughts: This was an interesting proposition for a match – two genius of the ring versus a sheer mountain of a man. Thankfully Penta and Fenix sold well for Comoroto, eventually having to double-team him to take him down. Solo ate the pin, keeping Comoroto’s rep solid for the future…

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #6: 10 & John Silver def. Kal Herro & Isaiah Moore

My Thoughts: This was very much an old-school squash, with John Silver pounding on Herro before both Dark Order members went to town on their opponents. A quick match that didn’t even go three minutes.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #7: Orange Cassidy, Chuckie T, Wheeler YUTA def. Matt Hardy & TH2

My Thoughts: This was a decent main event that continued the Matt Hardy/Orange Cassidy, HFO/Best Friends feud. Everyone got a spot, with YUTA finally looking like he’s out of the “losing” slump he’s been put in since he got to AEW. As usual though Cassidy was the star of this one, making Matt Hardy look like a fool in time for thier match on Dynamite.

My Score: 3 out of 5

News of the Night:

  1. Nyla Rose is the first entrant in the Casino Battle Royale at All Out.
  2. The Factory take one The Gunn Glub on Dynamite with Paul Wight on commentary

Final Verdict: 3/5
