Get your numbers in order with a spin of the Roulette wheel

by James Smith

When you log on and play Paddy Power online Roulette, we’re sure you’ve noticed one particular thing about the game. The numbers! Roulette is a game that focusses entirely on the sequence of numbers that line the famous wheel. This sequence dominates the game although, interestingly, it also differs depending on which version of the game that you play – either American or European.

The sequence on the American version of the wheel usually runs as follows:

  • 0, 28, 9, 26, 30, 11, 7, 20, 32, 17, 5, 22, 34, 15, 3, 24, 36, 13, 1, 00, 27, 10, 25, 29, 12, 8, 19, 31, 18, 6, 21, 33, 16, 4, 23, 35, 14, 2.

Whereas, the European wheel tends to follow this pattern:

  • 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26.

As we’re sure you’ve noticed, despite the number of pockets and layout of the wheels differing, they both contain the same highest pocket number – 36. The additional pocket that you’ll find on an American roulette wheel is due to the double zero that features in the game, alongside the standard single zero that Europeans may be used to.

Moving on, there are three main colours that you’ll find across a Roulette wheel, regardless of its origin. The first colours that you think of when it comes to Roulette are definitely red and black, as these dominate the majority of the numbered sections. But you’ll also find green sections on the wheel, highlighting the zero-value pocket, as well as the double zero, if applicable. These colours will usually follow the same numbered pattern across all different variations of the wheel, and that is as follows:

  • Red – 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 34 and 36.
  • Black – 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 31, 33 and 35.
  • Green – 0, and 00 – if you’re playing with an American wheel.

The numbers on the wheel are presented with no particular rhyme or reason, with the objective of being almost impossible to memorise. The only thing that is guaranteed with these numbers is that they will be alternated so that they aren’t in numerical order or grouped in odd and even sections.

With any game of chance, you’re going to encounter myths and legends, and Roulette is no different! Some players like to believe that, in a game, there are certain “hot” numbers that the ball will be more likely to land on. There’s no solid proof to support it this, nor any backing from a betting authority, but some casinos will try to benefit from the belief, featuring displays that detail the most frequent winning numbers from the past week or so. If a player is so far inclined, they may interpret this as a sign that those numbers are likely to pop up again, therefore choosing to bet on them over others.

Whether you like to play online or in-person, these number facts will remain the same. So, armed with your new knowledge, get out there and grab those wins!
