Now, I, like many, have my views on the writer/director of Jeepers Creepers, and this is, for sure, a controversial release from 101, but as I was sent the film to review, I will do just that. I will merley speak about the movie itself, and lay out a list of the extra features that appear on this release. Let’s get going.

Jeepers Creepers was released back in 2001 and was a successful movie. A road trip creature-feature, this flick was a popular one with many fans when it came out almost twenty years ago. It follows a couple, Patricia (Gina Phillips) and Darry (Justin Long), who are driving home from spring break when they see something dumped in a tunnel. When they go all mystery-machine and decide to investigate, they find a hideout packed with bodies. They, of course, high-tail it so they can report what they’ve seen, but somebody (or something) saw them in that tunnel, and is going to pursue them at all costs.

It’s a fun concept that has an unsettling first half that works well at building suspense and terror, but, in my opinion anyway, it loses itself later on. I don’t know if it’s the creature itself or merely that the tone changes later on, but I felt like that eerie atmosphere disappears eventually and the film falls a touch flat. It is a popular horror movie, though, in many circles, and it did bring back the creature-feature to mainstream horror, which is cool. The performances, especially from Phillips and Long, are good, and the locations are creepy. The main issue is, perhaps, that my own imagination gave me a scarier creature than what actually appears on the screen. That’s likely a subjective thing, though.

The Jeepers Creepers Blu-ray release from 101 looks very nice. It’s cleaned up in a good way, and pretty much looks like a brand new movie. There are a few features to be found here, including a couple of commentary tracks, a “Then and Now” featurette, some interviews and an old DVD making-of, but, in all honesty, none of them are particularly mesmerizing or outstanding. They’re fine, and there is some insight and a few interesting factoids to soak up, but the features weren’t very deep. Here’s that feature list;

Special Features:

  • Commentary with writer/director Victor Salva and stars Gina Philips and Justin Long
  • Commentary with director Victor Salva
  • Jeepers Creepers: Then and Now
  • From Critters to Creepers An Interview with producer Barry Opper
  • The Town Psychic – An Interview with actress Patricia Belcher
  • Deleted & Extended Scenes
  • Photo Gallery
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Bonus DVD: Behind the Peepers – The Making of Jeepers Creepers

In the end, this is a release that will divide opinion. You may be a fan of Jeepers Creepers, and be overjoyed to see it released in a nice package from 101 Films. You may be on the other side of the fence, too. Either way, this is a horror film that many people are a fan of, and 101 have done a nice job here.

Jeepers Creepers is released on Blu-ray, through 101 Films, on October 26th.
