The Last Week in Wrestling #14 (Wrestling Round-Up)
Welcome to this edition of The Last Week In Wrestling, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have some excellent wrestling to cover this time, so let’s do so.
Best Promo:
Mean Gene’s Memorialmania (Raw) – Hulk Hogan came out to speak about the death of Hulk Hogan in a touching moment. The promo ended with one last promo to Mean Gene, if only in tribute. The death of “Mean” Gene Okerlund was honored here with absolute class by Hulk Hogan and that’s that.
Best Moment:
The Fallen Angel Rises (Ring Of Honor) – Even though Christopher Daniels has signed with All Elite Wrestling, Daniels was given a segment dedicated to having a new contract be offered to him. Daniels has been positioned as a fighter who proved his worth in the ring by showing he was an honorable man when it counted most.
Best Move:
All The Best For The Bells (NXT: UK) – Joe Coffey used this move to win an excellent main event for NXT: UK weekly show.
Best Personality:
Joe Koff (Ring Of Honor) – Koff has proven himself a good performer when necessary and he was great working with Christopher Daniels in the already mentioned Best Moment of the week. Koff was earnest and sincere in his performance and it goes to show that, most often than not, less is more when you’re performing in front of people.
Best Character:
Finn Balor (WWE) – Finn pulled double duty this week and made quite the impression as a presence, thanks to his surprise appearance at the NXT: UK Takeover event from Blackpool.
Best Performance:
Pete Dunne (NXT: UK Takeover) – Dunne wrestled like a true champion in a main event title defense that was fantastic.
Best Wrestler:
Pete Dunne (NXT: UK) – Dunne had two great matches in one week, which is what any wrestler is looking to do.
Best Card:
NXT: UK Takeover – Blackpool (WWE) – This was a resounding success as every match delivered, even when time was not it’s ally.
Best Show:
205 Live (WWE) – If I seem like I’m repeating myself, it’s because I am. 205 Live continues to be the best part of the WWE and the least important on as well. Hopefully, Vince will lean on the cruiserweights to carry the league a bit more this year.
Best League:
WWE – Vince won most of the awards this week, but WWE was the best league regardless of that. Now, the WWE was not the perfect promotion, but it got a lot right when it needed to and that’s important.
Best Match:
James Drake & Zack Gibson versus Moustache Mountain (Tyler Bate & Trent Seven) – NXT UK Tag Team Championship Tournament Finals Match (WWE)
This was quite the debut for the newest division in the subsidiary league for the WWE. The match was of the highest caliber and the action was beyond what any-one could have hoped for. The only reason the match isn’t a 5 out of 5 is because it felt like some-thing was missing to give it a perfect score, but close enough is more than just good.
Final Verdict: 3.5/5
This was an excellent week of wrestling that may have missed the mark on some occasions, but it made an impact when the time was right.
