‘Lucha Underground’ Review (Oct 31st 2018)
Welcome to the Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and this is Ultima Lucha: Cuatro – Part 1! Did the exclamation point work? Screw it. Let’s rock and or rolllllllllllllllla!
Match #1: The Reptile Tribe defeated The Rabbit Tribe and Sammy Guevara, Ivelisse and XO Lishus – Trios Title Elimination Match
My Take: 3 out of 5 – This was a good match that had lots of action, but felt like it was less than the sum of its parts. I’d call this an old-fashioned lucha match, complete with wild spots and blood in all the wrong places… actually, the blood worked out where it was. The wrestling was fast and furious and made every-one look like a psychopath. The star of the match was Guevara, who has had one hell of a year and got a chance to show what many of us had been missing. Kevin Kross, who is working as the White Rabbit, did a spot where he did the Mandible Claw, or some-thing like it, and made Guevara bleed profusely with the move. I’d like to think it was fake blood, but we’ve all been fooled before. Over-all, this was good.
Match #2: Taya defeated Ricky Mundo
My Take: 2.5 out of 5 – For what it was, I’d say it was good. Taya got her revenge for Ricky ruining her wedding and that was that. The match was almost a squash and made her look tough, which I got a kick out of.
Match #3: Son of Havoc defeated Killshot – Mask Versus Mask Match
My Take: 4.5 out of 5 – I loved this. This was about as close to the Rey Mysterio/Eddie Guerrero match, in terms of being shorter yet greater than most, that you will get. These guys were all over the place and really went for the gusto with this match. These guys ripped each other to pieces and got over the power and prestige of the mask, as did the announcers. There was a call-back to the stretcher from the Hell of War match that Killshot was in that I think you’ll like, as well. This whole match was like a combination of a rapid-fire machine-gun welded to a rocket-launcher. Over-all, this was a great one that will be remembered as one of Lucha Underground’s best matches.
News Of The Night:
- Captain Vasquez was revealed to be Catrina’s mother.
- Vasquez and Aerostar merged their two halves of the medallion together and she disintegrated.
- Aerostar said the fight against the apocalypse must be fought with the medallion.
- Taya took Ricky Mundo’s doll.
- Killshot un-masked as Lieutenant Jermaine Strickland.
- Dante Fox revealed himself being on a mission, until now.
- Dante Fox granted Killshot’s request to be relieved of duty.
Final Verdict: 3.5/5
This was a good first part of Ultima Lucha with a fantastic main event.
