Welcome to this week’s Lucha Underground review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have a few big matches to cover here, so let’s do so.

Match #1: Mil Muertes (w/ Catrina) beat The Mack – Haunted House Match

This was a good match that brought Halloween a few months early. The idea here was that they had half of the inventory from Party City to attack each other with. This was like watching the Scott Steiner/Jeff Jarrett brawl from TNA/Impact that was booked to be Mick Foley’s idea. If Lou Thesz was here, he’d cut a promo on how stupid these two guys were for working a match like this and how bad their gimmicks are. The Mack deserves more than just being fodder for Mil, who is talented, but not likely to go too much farther with this character. Mil is a fun gimmick, but seems to lack depth, which could be added, but at the expense of his mystique. Mack is a blast everytime you see him and made this match into something that was worth having. I would have rather seen Mack and Mil put their wrestling skills to better use in a steel cage match, but nobody cares what a pin-cushion thinks.

Match #2: Jake Strong beat Aerostar

This was a fun squash that featured Strong dominating Aerostar, who just can’t seem to get past a certain point in his career, even though he’s been ready to be in the main event for some time.

Match #3: Main Event – Pentagon Dark beat Cage – Last Man Standing Match For The Lucha Underground World Title

This was the best match of the night. These two guys went right for the jugular every step of the way. There were several unprotected chair shots that were a little too much for comfort in this day and age, but at least they weren’t just random, so that’s something I suppose. Pentagon just keeps getting better and better in every facet, with his charisma, presence and wrestling. Cage is the most extreme comic book panel come to life and seems to enjoy every second of it. There are times when they fight that I could almost be persuaded to believe they’re actually trying to hurt each other. I sound stupid in that last sentence, but that’s how good these guys are together. I wouldn’t want to piss either of them off on a bad day, if you know what I mean. This was a hell of a main event and one that will be remembered as one of the best matches of the season.

News Of The Night:

  1. Drago saved Aerostar from being broken by Jake Strong.
  2. Catrina attacked Melissa Santos and beat her head into a pulp. It’ll take one hell of an Asprin to make that headache go away.
  3. Catrina wouldn’t lick The Mack.
  4. Ricky Mundo killed Benji! My God! Mundo killed him with a pen! The freakin’ doll told him to! Menthos! The Fresh-Maker!
  5. Ricky Mundo killed Angelico… several months ago.
  6. Johnny Mundo and Taya get married, next week.
  7. Johnny Mundo gets a shot at the Lucha Underground World Title, one week after he gets married.

Final Verdict: 3.5 out of 5 – This was an excellent card that a great main event. The story-line stuff worked well, with Ricky Mundo as a serial killer being a bizarre delight. I love the constant focus on the World Title and that the whole roster wants to win it.
