‘The New Legends of Monkey’ comes to Netflix this month
Produced for ABC (Austraila), Netflix and TVNZ, The New Legends of Monkey comes from Oscar and Emmy-winning production company See-Saw Films together with Jump Film & TV. The series is inspired by the 16th Century Chinese fable Journey To The West, which has already spawned a number of films and series, including the classic 70s TV show, Monkey, that everyone STILL loves today.
The series, which stars Chai Hansen as Monkey, Luciane Buchanan as Tripitaka, Josh Thomson as Pigsy and Emilie Cocquerel as Sandy, follows a motley trio of fallen gods with magical superpowers and incredible martial arts skills who escort a young monk, named Tripitaka, on a perilous quest to bring an end to demonic rule and restore balance to the world.
The New Legends of Monkey is reminiscent of the peril-infused mythic journeys of heroes of The Chronicle of Narnia and Lord of the Rings trilogy. Our anti-hero Monkey, a good God who inadvertently set free demons that ravaged humans and Gods alike was punished and frozen in a stone for 500 years until Tripitaka frees him and he confronts the consequences of his actions. In the battle between good and evil, Monkey and gods Pigsy and Sandy as well as Tripitaka, must face untold challenges in their journey to bring about harmony to the world again.
Debuting on ABC on 28th January, the first three episodes of The New Legends of Monkey debuted in Australia as a single 90-minute telemovie and subsequent episodes of the ten-episode series were released daily until 4th February 2018. Now the 10-part, half-hour, series is [finally] set to premiere on Netflix on April 27th… And I for one can’t wait!
