‘Death House’ Interview: Aleksandra Svetlichnaya

by Philip Rogers

With the eagerly-anticipated horror Death House now released in cinemas I got a chance to chat with actress Aleksandra Svetlichnaya about being involved with the film, what makes Death House stand out in the horror genre and her series of short films based in the #Dinnerverse.

What can we expect from Death House?

Based on my experience on set, I think it’s safe to say that the audience can expect a truly unforgettable horror film experience!

What was it like being involved such a landmark project in horror and with the films writer, director, Harrison Smith?

I can’t even begin to express how thankful and humbled I am to have been a small part of such an incredible project. This film is going to be something very special. And Harrison is a great director to work with. He is extremely efficient, but also produces very high-quality film work. And believe me, that is not a common combination!

What is your favourite moment during filming?

I don’t want to say too much and reveal any spoilers, but there was one scene that was very small, and I got to work closely with director Harrison Smith. That was very cool!

What do you think makes Death House stand out as something different in the horror genre?

As fans already know, Death House brings together many iconic horror movie actors, which in and of itself is pretty special and unique. What I’m also very excited to see on the big screen are the practical effects. Many horror films, and films in general, right now use so much CGI that it’s especially exciting to see some cool practical effects for once!

You have written, directed and featured in a series of individual short films, which are known collectively as the #Dinnerverse. For those who have not seen the films can you explain what they are about?

I have a martial arts and dance background, and when I began acting, I thought I would have the opportunity to do cool, action type stuff. Instead I was told over and over again that the only roles that I was considered “right” or “marketable” for were the “helpless pretty girl” type roles. This didn’t sit right with me. It was boring, it wasn’t what I wanted to do, and it was a horrible generalization of women, as far as I was concerned. So, I decided that I wasn’t going to wait for someone to write the character that I wanted for me, I was going to create her myself.

The DINNEVERSE is a mix of horror, action-adventure and humour, with a strong dose of Girl Power. Each film is a standalone with a unique story – sometimes more horror, sometimes more comedy, sometimes more action. The films can all be watched alone and in any order, but it’s definitely more fun to watch them all as there are threads throughout weaving this Universe together and surprise Easter Eggs as well!

Are there any plans to make a full-length feature film based in the #Dinnerverse?

I truly love the anthology format and I am very happy creating in that medium right now. But never say never! If Netflix calls and wants to give me a million dollars to make a DINNERVERSE feature, then who am I to say no?!

Do you have any other projects which you are working on at the moment?

I am currently concentrating on the DINNERVERSE, but I do hope to get involved with some other projects this year as well!

If someone wants to get into acting, what advice would you give them?

Don’t wait for someone to give you an opportunity – create it yourself! It’s incredibly easy now to produce and distribute your own content. You can shoot and edit right on your smartphone and then upload to YouTube or social media. Get together with your friends, or find local like-minded creative people, and just do it!
