The Gifted is a show that maybe about mutants and their powers, but it is more than just another X-Men themed show. It is about family, and this week we see how the Strucker parents have to adapt to the fact their children are different. For those looking for more mutant action, we also see some impressive powers shown off.

With Jace Turner (Coby Bell) even more focused on using the forces of Sentinel Services to capture the mutants, he agrees to work with Dr. Campbell (Garret Dillahunt) who is very interested in getting hold of the Strucker kids. Reed (Stephen Moyer) and his son Andy (Percy Hynes White) go on a mission with Eclipse (Sean Teale) to find out if they can find out any details about missing mutants.

In splitting the Strucker family up we are given a chance to see how both Reed and Kate (Amy Acker) are dealing with the changed world they now live in. Where Reed has to control his son and help him to realise he has to work as part of a team, Kate is more protective and tries to keep Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) from losing touch with what she sees as normalcy.

What we see with Lauren’s view on that is that it clashes with Polaris (Emma Dumont) who this week starts to teach younger mutants how to use their powers to defend themselves. When the need is there for action though, she has to realise that her children have to be able to defend themselves and their family. This is where their powers can be used for good, and not just hidden away.

Andy is an interesting mutant because each week we see his power grow, and we see further examples of it this week. When he puts his mind to it, he achieves what he wants and has yet to find a limit to his powers. This is both worrying and impressive, but will no doubt cause problems in the future. The fact that his temper can lead to inadvertent setting off of his powers is a sign that things may not go well in future episodes, unless he learns more control.

This week we learn more about Thunderbird (Blair Redford) and his history. It is also revealed that he has a connection to the X-Men, which explains why he takes the leader role. With mention of his father, could this be a family connection to the missing superheroes? There does seem to be a hint this week. His confrontation with Blink (Jamie Chung) is also important this week, with her eventually leaving, hopefully though she’ll return soon as she is one of the more interesting characters.

One thing that has to be mentioned about The Gifted is the impressive range of powers that are being shown off in the show. This week’s display is impressive and shows an imaginative side to the abilities that each mutant has. Hopefully we’ll see this creative way of using the powers shown off more as the big action scene of the episode was the highlight of this week.

The Gifted has managed to be better week after week and is turning into an X-Men show that is worth sticking with. Never afraid to show off the superhuman powers the mutants possess, it also doesn’t lose the focus on family. This is where the show finds its strength, and makes its characters likeable, and will keep the audience coming back for more.

***** 5/5
