5 Questions: Deanna Russo talks ‘The Ice Cream Truck’

We sent over our usual 5 questions and slipped in one extra because.. you know.. why not??
Writer-director Megan Freels Johnston’s suburban nightmare The Ice Cream Truck will hit theaters August 18 and be released day-and-date on VOD via Uncork’d Entertainment. The provocative psychological thriller stars Deanna Russo (Being Human, Gossip Girl) as Mary, who moves back to her suburban hometown after her husband gets relocated for work. As her family ties up loose ends back home, she moves into their new house alone. And although the move makes Mary nostalgic for her youth, there’s something very sinister about that Ice CreamTruck that patrols her suburb.
When and how did you get involved in The Ice Cream Truck?
Last fall, Megan emailed me the script asking for notes, but she was indirectly taking my temperature on the role of Mary! I fell right into her trap. I loved the character so much that I volunteered myself to play her if she couldn’t find anyone else more famous haha!
How did you hear about it?
Megan and I have been friends for years, so we’ve always been aware of what the other is working on, rooting for each other’s success.
Being a regular on the the small screen, did you have to work around your TV commitments?
That’s what was so serendipitous about this project! It fell perfectly in between all my other commitments. There was a possibility the schedule was going to push, but thankfully it stuck to the original start date.
Was it fun to play a character markedly different to previous roles you’ve played? What did you enjoy about it?
I loved how Mary was always saying what I was thinking. The pastel suburban world Megan created is so off-putting, that it was easy to embrace the mentality of, “What am I doing here?”
Where did the movie shoot? Did it require you to relocate?
We shot up in Porter Ranch and Woodland Hills so fortunately we were all able to remain local.
So that’s my 5 questions but I have got to ask… Are you a horror fan? Do you think it helps to be one when doing a movie like The Ice Cream Truck?
Yes, I love horror! But I’m from a different arm of it all. Megan loves the classic slashers and psychological thrillers, but I’m more of a supernatural/science-fiction fan. I grew up on Hellraiser, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Poltergeist. I didn’t sleep much as a kid.
