‘Hawk the Slayer’ to FINALLY get a sequel!

by Phil Wheat

Legendary swords-and-sorcery film Hawk the Slayer is to get a sequel, 35 years after the original became a cult hit. The 1980 film, which starred John Terry and Jack Palance, has become a true cult classic – famously referred to in Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes, and Edgar Wright’s seminal comedy Spaced – and a sequel has been talked about since the original film was released.

Rebellion have announced that writer and director Terry Marcel – who helmed the original movie back in 1980 – has agreed with Jason Kingsley OBE, Rebellion’s CEO, on a deal which will see a Kickstarter launched to part-fund the long-talked-about sequel, called Hawk the Hunter. Rebellion will also invest in the movie, with Jason and fellow Rebellion director Chris Kingsley acting as producers. The Oxford-based company, renowned for games titles such as Aliens vs Predator and Sniper Elite, will assist in the Kickstarter campaign and has also acquired the games and publishing rights to Hawk the Slayer.

Terry explained:

This is a dream come true, I’m delighted to be working with a true fan of sword-and-sorcery whose talent means the possibilities for Hawk are endless – keep watching Hawk fans!

Jason commented:

Hawk the Slayer was important to me as a boy, and has remained an important touchstone for me now as an adult. It blazed a shining path of true sword and sorcery movie magic for others to follow. I am delighted, and slightly awed, to be part of the team helping to create more adventures for Hawk and his friends.

Hawk the Slayer will screen, with a restored print, as part of this years Frightfest – in the Discovery at Prince Charles Cinmea strand – on August 29th at 1.20pm
