Hasbro and IDW plan new ‘Transformers G.I. Joe’ crossover

by Phil Wheat

Hasbro has teamed up with comic publisher IDW for a brand new on-going comic series that will bring Transformers and G.I. Joe together in one storyline. It is not the first time the two franchises have crossed over – they have appeared together in comics, the two franchises have teamed up over half a dozen times since the first G.I. Joe and the Transformers comic in 1986.

This new comic will explore an encounter between these starkly different teams as G.I. Joe troops are pitted against the ominous threats of Cybertron. The series, which will be co-written – with Transformers veteran John Barber – and drawn by Tom Scioli (Godland, American Barbarian), will debut in summer 2014. Check out Scioli’s retro cover artwork below…

“We’ve been waiting for the right opportunity for this event, and the anniversary of both Transformers and G.I. Joe in 2014 is definitely the perfect time,” says Michael Kelly, director of global publishing, Hasbro. “We are very excited to be working with IDW on this project, and I for one can’t wait to read the next chapter of this adventure.”

“This feels like the comic I was born to make,” says Tom Scioli, who will draw and co-write the series. “We’re asking big questions. Is war an inevitable condition of life? What is free will? What is the future of man and machine as the line between them becomes increasingly blurred? The G.I. Joe team is trained to deal with dangerous situations and this is the ultimate test of their training. The Transformers characters push the boundaries of what shapes life can take in this infinite universe of ours. Perhaps it will be a machine that teaches us what it is to be human.”
