Grimmfest 2013 – Line-up announced
3 Venues… 5 days… 36 films!
Yes, Northern England’s premier horror film festival, Grimmfest, is back for 2013, this time taking place at three venues across the north – including two in Manchester – allowing for a much bigger programme for this year. After the launch on October 2nd at Stockport Plaza, Grimmfest 2013 will continue from October 3rd – 6th, at the Dancehouse Theatre, AND the Lass O’Gowrie, Manchester. There’s a number of films scheduled this year that (as of yet) haven’t played any other UK film festivals, so there’s bound to be something showing that you haven’t seen, or maybe might not, see again!
One of my good friends James Cullen Bressack is back this year with another of his films, the excellent and innovative To Jennifer, after making a huge splash last year with the controversial Hate Crime. Other highlights, for me, include Thanatamorphose, On Air, Home Sweet Home and The Butterfly Room. And if you haven’t seen it yet i STRONGLY urge everyone to check out what I thought was THE best film of 2012 by far – John Dies at the End.
Grimmfest 2013 will launch on October 2nd with a special preview night at the spectacular 1200-seater Art Deco Super Cinema, Stockport Plaza. This will feature a screening of the fully-restored 40th Anniversary rerelease of cult classic THE WICKER MAN and Q&A with the film’s director Robin Hardy(TBC), and, in celebration of the Bicentennial of a certain book of fairytales by the festival’s illustrious namesakes, the Brothers Grimm, the black-hearted stoner comedy HANSEL AND GRETEL GET BAKED. There will also be the world premiere of the short film RADIO SILENCE by Mat Johns, whose previous short, RUN was something of an internet sensation.
Further festival highlights will include a make-up workshop and Q&A with SFX maestro Shaune Harrison, whose work was most recently showcased in WORLD WAR Z, a HELLRAISER event and screening with actor Nicholas Vince, the English premiere of surreal Southern Gothic shocker JUGFACE, the European premieres of the chilling coming of age story FOUND and tense psychological thriller ON AIR, and the return of iconic genre legend Barbara Steele in THE BUTTERFLY ROOM. The festival also boasts its very own “fringe”, which will feature some of the more left-field, challenging, independent films of the festival. These will include the UK premieres of HOUSE OF 100 EYES, a gruelling social satire about a suburban couple struggling to make a snuff movie, THANATOMORPHOSE, a harrowing study of mental and physical decay, and TO JENNIFER, a found-footage road movie into the heart of psychological darkness from James Cullen Bressack, whose previous, debut, feature was one of the most controversial talking points of last year’s festival.
