‘Power Rangers Samurai – Volume 4: The Ultimate Duel’ Review
Power Rangers Samurai – Volume 4: The Ultimate Duel sees the first season of the show reach its climax as the Power Rangers take to arms against a host of evil Nighlok, on the path to their biggest challenge yet. In this epic finale, Jayden is forced into meeting Deker in The Ultimate Duel of good vs evil. This volume of Power Rangers Samurai features the final three episodes of season one (bar the two specials, which are also included on this disc): Boxed In, Broken Dreams and The Ultimate Duel.
Episode 1×18 – Boxed In
After being poisoned by Octoroo (in the previous episode) Jayden is taken to a nearby river by Deker to purge the poison from him so that he can recover enough to finally duel. Back at the Shiba house, Antonio tries to work on the Black Box whilst the others Rangers recover from their battle with Arachnitor – who returns for another battle, mutated by Xandred for his betrayal. Unable to finish the Black Box, Antonio instead locates Jayden and saves him right before Deker can duel him. Both weakened they then join the other Rangers to repel Arachnitor before the giant Moogers attack the city.
Episode 1×19 – Broken Dreams
The Rangers face off against the Nighlok Rhinosnorus who uses his powers to trap people in the dream world, including Dayu – who’s moping around the human world following an arguement with Master Xandred that saw him destroy her beloved harmonium – Mia and Antonio; a dream world where Mia learns that Dayu and Deker were both once human and married. Meanwhile Jayden uses his symbol power to open a portal to the dream world allowing Kevin and Mike to enter, but exhausts himself in the process, which is bad news when Deker shows up to challenge him once more. Realising Jayden is not fit to fight, Deker gives him 24 hours before they duel or else he will start attacking innocent people.
Episode 1×20 – The Ultimate Duel
Continuing from the end of the last episode, Kevin and the other rangers try to talk Jayden out of fighting Deker alone, however he refuses and tells them he must be the one to duel Deker or he will never give up. Whilst Jayden battles Deker the Rangers must face Rhinosnorus once more, this time with Kevin in charge of leading the team. Facing Deker one the beach, Jayden finds himself evenly matched. Eventually Jayden allows Deker to injure him in order to get close enough to finish him off. With Deker’s sword, Uramasa, broken in half, Deker is defeated and released from his Nighlok curse…
The last volume of Power Rangers Samurai (before the series becomes Super Samurai for its second year), Volume 4 is packed with the same butt-kicking action and family-friendly morals we’ve come to expect from the series. This DVD release also includes two bonus episodes: ‘Party Monsters’ in which the Nighlok hold a Halloween party and ‘Christmas Together, Friends Forever’ where the Power Rangers reflect on their first year together.
