When I think of Roy Scheider, I immediately think of the horror classic Jaws and the adventure TV series SeaQuest DSV. But Scheider starred in a wealth of films beyond those iconic roles, and while not all were Oscar-calibre productions, many have earned enduring cult status over the years.

One such film is Blue Thunder. While it may not rank among the most celebrated entries in Scheider’s filmography, it has long held a special place for genre fans. Now, Arrow Video has restored and released Blue Thunder on 4K Ultra HD for the very first time, giving this cult action-crime classic a new lease of life.

The Los Angeles Police test pilot for an experimental patrol helicopter learns the sinister implications of the new vehicle.

Back in 1983, Blue Thunder was no doubt a thrilling ride, and while some elements may feel a little dated when viewed through a 2026 lens, that hardly diminishes the film’s entertainment value. Rather than dwell on those quirks, it’s better to focus on what still works so well — the strong performances, the superb aerial photography and the dynamic camerawork, all of which remain genuinely impressive. More than 40 years later, much of what made Blue Thunder exciting in the first place still holds up remarkably well.

Blue Thunder has been transferred to Ultra HD in 2160p HEVC encoded video, with the option for lossless DTS-HD 5.1 or 2.0 Master Audio. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The colours are vivid, and the flesh tones are correct – overall, the picture is crisp and clean. I did not see any signs of digital artefacts or damage to the print while screening this film. I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of this restoration. In addition to a wonderful-looking restoration, Arrow Video added a great amount of bonus features to this release, making it something very special, including:

Special Features:

  • Archival audio commentary by director John Badham, editor Frank Morriss, and motion control supervisor Hoyt Yeatman
  • Flight Risk, a brand new interview with director John Badham
  • A Rollercoaster Ride, a brand new interview with actor Candy Clark
  • Catching Up, a brand new interview with actor Malcolm McDowell
  • Ride with the Angels: Making Blue Thunder, an archival three-part documentary from 2006
  • The Special: Building Blue Thunder, an archival featurette from 2006 on the design and construction of the iconic helicopter
  • Archival 1983 promotion featurette
  • Extended scene
  • Theatrical trailer
  • Image gallery

Bomus Material:

  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Chris Skinner
  • Collectors’ booklet featuring new writing on the film by Dennis Capicik and original production notes

Arrow Video has dug deep into the archives and assembled an impressive collection of supplemental material for this 4K release of Blue Thunder, packed with excellent archival extras. I would have liked to have seen a few more brand-new on-disc bonus features included, though this set isn’t without fresh material. The collector’s booklet, featuring a new essay on the film by Dennis Capicik, is a welcome addition, and the newly commissioned artwork is nothing short of stellar.

Honestly, Blue Thunder is not the greatest Roy Scheider film, but it is still a watchable adventure – especially if you love 80s cinema. And there is no better way to experience it than on this new 4K from Arrow Video.

**** 4/5
