The Asylum is best known for their B-movie horror and mockbusters. One of their most successful movie series would have to be the Sharknado franchise. Who among us has not watched one of these campy horror films? But The Asylum isn’t all campy horror. They have made some pretty decent little films like Christmas Belles (2019), Vinyl (2000) and The Twisted Nanny (2019).
In 2025, The Asylum delivered another entry in their long line of supernatural horror films with Evil Nun, directed by Jose Prendes. Fans of The Asylum’s output – as well as physical media collectors – can now add the film to their shelves, as Evil Nun has been released on DVD.
When a Catholic youth ministry is invited to spend the night in a vacant Mexican church, they’re trapped by the ghostly apparition of a vengeful nun. Now their only hope is to break the curse before she claims them all, one deadly sin at a time.
Evil Nun throws in a few interesting twists and turns along the way and, as with most films from The Asylum, blends horror with a dose of comedy. That said, there’s no denying the movie leans heavily on familiar genre tropes. Some viewers may enjoy the sense of familiarity this brings, but others will likely find the film a little too cliché for its own good.
The acting often feels stiff, the direction is serviceable at best, and the special effects are merely passable. While none of these elements completely derail the film, they never really come together in a way that makes the experience particularly engaging. Unfortunately, despite its attempts at fun, this is one Asylum release that this reviewer simply couldn’t find much enjoyment in.
Evil Nun has been transferred to DVD in widescreen format. The audio track is an English Dolby Digital 2.1 Surround Sound and there are English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The picture quality of this transfer is fine – there are no digital artefacts or audio anomalies. As for bonus features, there are just Asylum trailers. Disappointing.
** 2/5
Now, some people may really enjoy the campiness of the Evil Nun film. And if you love The Asylum films, well, by all means, pick up this DVD. But if you are looking for some serious horror, you might want to look elsewhere.
