Guide to The City in NBA 2K26

What is The City in NBA 2K26?
The City in NBA 2K26 is a central hub for MyCAREER and Online play. When first loading into The City, everything may come across as confusing and overwhelming. In The City, there’s a lot to do and you may find it hard to decide what you want to do; this beginner’s guide to The City in NBA 2K26 will give you the guidance needed to confidently navigate The City.
What matters first is setting up your MyPLAYER correctly, starting your MyCAREER and earning VC through balanced modes, which won’t punish you for a low skill or low overall rating. Learn where key locations are, such as the Arena, practice facility and quest hubs. Don’t allow yourself to get distracted by park games and don’t attempt to increase your reputation early on. Try to remember that The City rewards slow and smart progression, so don’t rush into anything too early before allowing your MyPLAYER to improve.
Understanding the Layout of The City
Take note that The City is divided into functional zones, not random locations. Each area serves a specific purpose.
Practice and progression areas include the practice facility and MyCAREER quest hub. The Practice Facility is marked on the map with a dumbbell or training icon. This is near the central hub; the Practice Facility assists in badge progression, skill drills and performance boosts. The MyCAREER quest hub is centrally located and clearly marked on the map with quest icons.
Game Modes and Courts include the Rec Center, Park Courts and Pro-Am Facilities.
The Rec Center has a large indoor arena icon and is separated from the outdoor courts. In The Rec, you’ll play structured 5v5 games. The Park Courts are found by entering the gateway with the large rotating ball over the top. The park courts entail casual online games. Pro-Am facilities can be found near the REC and the beach area. These are meant for organised squads and competitive play.
Shops and customisation areas include Clothing and Animation stores and Event/Seasonal areas. Clothing and animation stores are spread throughout different shopping districts within The City and they provide cosmetic upgrades and animations for players, however if you’re a beginner, I recommend you don’t spend VC on this early on. Event and Seasonal areas are highlighted on the map during limited time events, they provide bonus rewards and REP, but these aren’t essential early on.
When navigating The City in NBA 2K26, the map is your best friend. If you’re ever lost, open up the map, it will have a key on the side showing every major location with clear icons; this will make it easier to know where you should go next.
What to do immediately?
Create your MyPLAYER and start your core MyCAREER quests, which will help you gain VC in order to upgrade the overall of your MyPLAYER. Go to settings and adjust controller settings and gameplay settings to your personal preference. This will make your experience in The City more enjoyable and playable. Make sure not to rush online games, with a build which is underpowered; you must progress at your own speed as the fundamental foundations of your MyPLAYER matter more than your REP level.
The Most Important Places for Beginners in The City
When just starting out in The City, prioritise beginner-friendly areas like the Practice Facility to boost your attributes and increase your skill when it comes to playing NBA 2K26. The MyCAREER quest hub can help gain VC in order to promote progression and can assist in story progression. If you want to participate in online play, some of the most beginner-friendly modes (yet still hard) can include the Theatre and the Rec.
Some of the least beginner friendly areas can include the Park Courts and Pro-Am; these may only be viable options if you have good teammates, as the competition is very strong in these areas. Just like in real basketball, preparation and patience usually lead to better long-term results than jumping straight into the toughest matchups. Many players who enjoy following basketball culture both virtually and in real life often engage with the wider NBA community through fantasy leagues, analysis, or platforms such as sports betting at BOYLE Sports, but in The City your main investment should always be time spent improving your build and understanding your role on the court.
How REP, VC and Progression work in The City
VC is the in-game currency in NBA 2K26, it is used to upgrade player attributes and purchase animations/clothing for your MyPLAYER. This can be earned by playing or bought using the Get VC section in the settings. REP Level is a year-long progression system that uses performance online (wins and teammate grade) to determine the skill level of a player from Rookie all the way to Legend.
Increasing REP Level can unlock rewards, such as cap-breakers and animations. The attributes of a MyPLAYER determine the level of a player’s capabilities across shooting, finishing, playmaking, defense and physicals. These attributes can allow you to unlock certain animations and badge tiers. Badges act as a progression system for frequently used skills, badges you have for any skills will level up the more they are used, increasing the likelihood of performing that skill the badge specialises in at a high level.
How to win when playing online in The City?
The best mode for new players would be the rec. It allows for a more collective team effort and therefore there’s less pressure on players to individually perform. When playing online, learn to stick to your role and utilise the voice chat to enforce communication basics on defence and spacing on offence. Playing strong and good team basketball can help the most in securing a win, don’t try and do everything yourself (especially if you have a low overall).
How to Enjoy The City
The City is a long-term experience, which shouldn’t be rushed. It is based on steady progression and you shouldn’t try to rush and compete immediately. Instead, try to enjoy the game, learn how to play and complete the MyCAREER story and MyCAREER quests to help increase the attributes of your MyPLAYER. Learning where everything is in The City will come with time but as long as you learn to use the key in your map and as long as you understand that progression is a process, you will get along just fine!
