Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen, Nathalie Baye, Amy Adams, James Brolin, Brian Howe | Written by Frank Abagnale Jr., Stan Redding, Jeff Nathanson | Directed by Steven Spielberg

Steven Spielberg has crafted a filmmaking legacy that few directors could ever hope to match, with a filmography that remains remarkable in both scope and quality. Over the years he has collaborated with countless great actors, though Harrison Ford and Tom Hanks have long stood out as two of his most frequent and celebrated creative partners.

In 2002, Spielberg reunited with Hanks and teamed him with Leonardo DiCaprio for the stylish crime thriller Catch Me If You Can. Now, for the first time, the film arrives in a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray combo pack, giving physical media fans the chance to own this gripping biographical thriller in both HD and Ultra HD, and revisit its thrilling cat-and-mouse adventure time and time again.

Frank didn’t go to flight school… Frank didn’t go to medical school… Frank didn’t go to law school… because Frank’s still in high school! Inspired by the true story of a brilliant young master of deception and the FBI agent hot on his trail.

Catch Me If You Can is a slickly crafted cat-and-mouse thriller inspired by a true story, with Steven Spielberg expertly balancing suspense and humour to create an energetic, highly entertaining ride. That said, at just under two and a half hours, the runtime does begin to feel a little indulgent. A tighter edit, trimming a handful of scenes, could have given the film a snappier pace. Even so, these minor reservations don’t detract too much, and it remains a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging piece of cinema.

Paramount Home Entertainment has transferred Catch Me If You Can to 4K in 2160p and to Blu-ray in 1080p, and both are presented in widescreen format. There are several audio tracks included on the 4K, an English and a French DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and an English audio description. There are also English and French subtitles. For the Blu-ray audio tracks there are English and French DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and Portuguese and Spanish tracks in Dolby Digital 5.1. Finally, on the Blu-ray there are subtitles in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

This release presents Catch Me If You Can in crystal clarity – the colours are bright and vibrant, and the audio is clean. There are no digital artefacts or audio anomalies. Watching this thriller in 4k is like watching it for the first time. But Paramount Home Entertainment didn’t just bare bones a film on a disc, they made sure to port over some bonus features to this 2-disc set as well:

Special Features:

  • Catch Me if You Can: Behind the Camera
  • Cast Me if You Can: Casting the Film
  • Scoring Catch Me If You Can
  • Frank Abagnale: Between Reality and Fiction
  • The FBI Perspective
  • Catch Me If You Can: In Closing
  • Photo Galleries

In addition to the above-listed bonus features, Paramount have included a digital copy of the film that you can redeem. I always enjoy the idea of the digital copy; although, as we have all come to realise, digital copies can be taken away at any time. So that is why the discs are the best way to own a movie.

**** 4/5

If you enjoy a good biographical thriller, Catch Me If You Can on 4K would make a nice little addition to your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
