‘Sour Party’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Samantha Westervelt, Amanda Drexton, Reggie Watts, Corey Feldman, Christopher Rodriguez Marquette | Written and Directed by Amanda Drexton, Michael A. Drexton

Anchor Bay Entertainment recently rose like a phoenix from the ashes of oblivion. Most film fans and physical media enthusiasts recall the exceptional entertainment that came from Anchor Bay all those years ago. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment have been releasing independent films with a lot of entertainment value. Recently, we have seen Anchor Bay Entertainment Blu-ray releases like Abruptio, Cursed in Baja, Crust and My Dinner with Leatherface. Now it is time for their next release, Sour Party.
Gwen and James are two broke, self absorbed, emotionally stunted 30-somethings, eking their way through a meager LA existence. They’ve tried everything to get rich quick from cliche artistic endeavors and failed business startups to sex work, playing the victims all the way. When Gwen realizes she forgot her older sister’s baby shower the night before, she’s determined to save face in front of her family and get her sister a proper gift… from the registry. After putting their heads together, Gwen and James assemble a list of people they believe owe them money and set out on a twisted road trip across Los Angeles in an attempt to collect on their ‘debts.’ What begins as a journey to confront the ghosts of their pasts quickly shifts gears as Gwen and James realize maybe they’re not the victims after all – maybe they’ve just been throwing themselves a sour party. Featuring hysterical performances from Reggie Watts (Comedy Bang! Bang!), Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys), and Christopher Rodriguez Marquette (Barry), this female-led comedy in the vein of SUPERBAD will resonate with anyone who’s felt lost in their life.
Sour Party is an offbeat, hilarious adventure. The chemistry between Samantha Westervelt and Amanda Drexton is undeniable. They seem like two people who have been slacking off for decades. They are perfect partners in crime when they attack the garden. They have a natural give-and-go in the scenes as they track down their friends. They also play up the Southern Californian vibe by including the baby gift turning out to be a “Holistic Health Kit” for the newborn.
Their friends are SoCal figures, including Corey Feldman (The Lost Boys) in a guru role. Gwen and James’ viral video dance routine is funny and seems like something TikTok would force on my feed. While the film would seem rather floaty, the fact that the duo have a fixed time to get the money and make the baby shower keeps it a rush. Can Gwen prove she’s not THAT sister to her sister and mother?
Sour Party has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic. The audio track is an English Dolby Digital 5.1. The movie is subtitled in English and Spanish. This transfer is crisp and clean with no signs of digital artefacts or audio anomalies. But Anchor Bay didn’t stop there; they added a couple of cool bonus features to this Blu-ray, including:
Special Features:
- Audio Commentary featuring Amanda Drexton (Writer/Director/Star), Michael Drexton (Writer/Director), Samatha Westervelt (Star) and Steven Moreno (Cinematographer). This is an entertaining listen as you can tell these four really enjoy reliving the making of this film.
- Sour Party: Video Yearbook A near 4-minute video featurette that tracks the first and last day of shooting Sour Party.
Okay, so Sour Party is not Citizen Kane, but it is an extremely entertaining film. And as you can see, this Blu-ray includes a lot of cool behind-the-scenes material, which takes this Blu-ray release from cool to must-own!
***** 5/5
Sour Party is out now on DVD and Blu-ray from Anchor Bay.
