Oddly Satisfying Activities That Keep Your Home Clean

Some chores feel like a bit of a punishment – and a never-ending one at that! Scrubbing the oven, untangling cables, or trying to clean up all the crumbs in the kitchen… that’s not fun. But every now and then, cleaning does actually offer a rare moment of satisfaction – these are those tasks that don’t just leave your home sparkling, but also give you a weird sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. You know the ones. They’re the ones where you step back and admire your work. The ones where you perhaps take a picture to send to people who you know are going to appreciate what you’ve done. And if you’re looking for cleaning tasks that are actually enjoyable (and they do exist), here are some of the most oddly satisfying ways to keep your home spotless.
Dusting With A Microfibre Cloth
There’s something strangely addictive about gliding a microfibre cloth over a dusty surface and watching it go from dull and grimy to instantly spotless. It’s the same feeling you get when you erase things from a blackboard – it’s fast, effortless, and deeply satisfying. Bookshelves, skirting board, and TV screens are some of the best areas to do this job, although pretty much any surface in your home will benefit from it. And the best part is that you don’t need any type of cleaning product either – you just need a good microfibre cloth and a few swipes and suddenly your home looks so much cleaner, all in the space of a couple of minutes.
Peeling Off Stubborn Stickers
Why is peeling off a sticker in one perfect piece so much more satisfying than ripping it into shreds? It’s one of life’s simple pleasures, but if you’ve ever struggled with a price label that refuses to budge, you’ll know how annoying the sticky residue that’s left behind is. The trick is to use a little bit of heat, like a hairdryer or some warm soap water. If you do that, it loosens the adhesive and makes it a lot easier to peel off in one amazing, satisfying motion. And if it happens to be an old sticker that’s been annoying you for years, that’s even better!
Vacuuming The Carpet
There’s something so very rewarding about running a vacuum cleaner over a messy carpet and seeing those neat, fresh lines appear. It’s a bit like mowing the lawn in that respect, but it’s a lot easier and you don’t have to be outside (which isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea). Even if the floors weren’t all that dirty, vacuuming still gives you the instant illusion of a cleaner space, and sometimes that’s precisely what you need. And if you have pets, that can be fantastic because of all the fur. We don’t mean it’s fantastic that there’s fur all over the place, of course, but it is great to see it get vacuumed up and leave behind a lovely fresh carpet. Plus that’s going to help make your home feel more comfortable, so it’s a win-win.
Making The Sink Shine
A kitchen sink is one of those things that doesn’t look dirty until you clean it, and then suddenly it’s ten times shinier and you’re left wondering what happened and why you ever let it get so dull (you won’t have realised, so don’t feel too guilty about it). If you want to see something really impressive, you’ll want to use baking soda and a scrubbing brush because that combination completely lifts away grime and leaves your sink sparkling. The cleaning is a wonderful thing, and it’s definitely going to feel satisfying, but probably the best bit of the whole job is when you rinse the sink afterwards and watch all the soap suds disappear, leaving you with a shiny sink. What could be better than that?
Using A Power Washer
If you’ve never used a power washer, you’re missing out on one of the most satisfying cleaning experiences know to humankind – there really is just something so amazing about blasting away years of dirt and watching a surface go from grimy to pristine in mere seconds. Driveways, patios, decking, walls, garden furniture… nothing is too much for a power washer, and it’s pure joy to use one. It’s basically something you can just have a lot of fun with, and underneath the mess, you’ll be revealing a beautiful clean surface. Once the job is done (often too soon, as it can be a quick thing to do), you’ll love the look of whatever it is you’ve cleaned, and you’ll feel totally satisfied with the fact that you took things into your own hands and did it yourself.
Folding Freshly Washed Laundry
Folding laundry is definitely one of those things that usually feels like a proper chore, but there’s certainly something undeniably satisfying about neatly stacking fresh, warm clothes straight out of the dryer or off the washing line. And towels and bed sheets are even better! Seeing them pile up in perfectly folded stacks makes you feel so good and you’ll feel like everything’s just right, and that can even be enough to help you feel motivated for the rest of the day. It’s worth learning how to fold clothes the right way, and there are plenty of YouTube videos that can teach you. Once you know, you’ll be able to put your learning into practice and store your things away neatly and tidily – just imagine opening up your drawer and seeing all those items of clothing so neatly stacked and folded. It sounds like a dream.
Wiping Down A Foggy Mirror
There’s a reason people write messages in steam-covered mirrors, and it’s because there’s a lot of fun in wiping it all away again and seeing your reflection pop back up. If you’ve never wiped a cloth across a foggy bathroom mirror and enjoyed how it looked (and felt), you absolutely know that it’s a satisfying thing to do. It’s even better when the mirror is actually dirty as well (bathroom mirrors do tend to get covered in toothpaste and soap splashes) because the result is always a joy, and it’s quite surprising to see the difference between before and after.
