Fandom Decor Ideas: Stylish Ways to Showcase Your Collection

by James Smith

If you’re a big fan of a book or movie series, or if you can’t get enough of comic books or manga, it’s likely that you’ve got a considerable number of merch and collectibles in your room. Whether you’re a WWE fan, a DC stan, or a Potterhead, collecting merch and memorabilia is part of the whole fandom experience, and in a recent survey of UK adults, it was found that 57 percent have an active collection. Amassing more and more merch can be thrilling, especially if you manage to get hold of a rare item. However, there’s a risk of running out of room to store your treasures, and you’ll have to come up with ways to display them without making your home look disorderly or cluttered.

Storing a collection in a game room or bedroom is the default for those who need to be around their favourite things as much as possible. However, there’s no reason to keep your collection confined in these areas. With a little effort and some creativity, you can showcase your precious items in an aesthetically-pleasing way, and integrate your collection into your decor.

Frame Your Items

Using frames is an excellent way to display your collection in your home. If you’re living in a flat with other family members or roommates who don’t share your passion though, don’t fret. Simply choose discrete pieces to frame, which means ones that aren’t instantly recognisable to those who aren’t part of your fandom. For instance, if you’re a fan of Skyrim, placing a large poster of, say, Aela the Huntress on your living room wall is a no-no. But if you have an ancient-looking map of Skyrim, that would be a tasteful addition to any shared space. Use an A3 frame with or without picture mounts to display the map on a sideboard or hallway wall.

If you’re living alone, then the sky’s the limit when it comes to decorating your abode with framed photos or posters related to your fandom. You can frame a one-of-a-kind fan-made art of your favourite character and hang it on your bathroom wall. There’s also the option of creating a gallery wall in your hallway or living room wall. To make your kitchen or dining room more interesting, frame colourful, pop art style photos or posters, then display them in odd numbered groupings, like threes or fives on a single wall or area.

Work Your Collection Into Your Decor

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t place your extra large, limited edition ‘Doctor Who’ Tardis cookie jar in the kitchen. But if you’re concerned that it may look out of place in your mostly neutral hued space, then find ways to work it into your decor. One trick to make your cookie jar blend in is to add more items in the same colour. For example, if your kitchen is painted and decorated in mostly white and cream, display some plates or mugs in shades of royal or midnight blue, then add a ceramic vase and fill it with blue hydrangeas. Don’t forget to add blue and white seat cushions or chair pads to kitchen chairs to tie the whole look together, then place your Tardis cookie jar in an area where everyone can see it.

Use Your Collection to Add Humor and Wit to Your Interiors

Inject some humor and wit into your interiors by incorporating pieces of your collection in unexpected ways. If you’ve got potted plants in your living room, place some of your inexpensive figurines on the soil, or add a two-foot-tall action figure in the bathroom and use it as a toilet paper holder. During the holidays, attach pieces of string to some of your collectibles and hang them on your Christmas tree. You can also place a gold tray on your coffee table and display action figures or small dolls on top of it. Even better, create scenes using your toys– place tiny cups and a teapot in front of your Chewbacca and Han Solo action figures so they can have afternoon tea, or let Harry, Hermione, and Ron have a dance party.

Your collection doesn’t have to be hidden away in your bedroom. Consider these tips to brighten up and personalise your living spaces in a fun yet tasteful way, and enjoy being surrounded with your favourite things.
