Airing since 2016, My Hero Academia is the anime adaptation of Kohei Horikoshi’s successful manga series. Set within a hero-focused society, the story arrived at the right time to capitalize on the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With its thoughtful and unique take on a popular subgenre, the series has grown to become one of the most popular anime shows currently airing.

With its eighth and final series announced for 2025, the finale draws closer for this tremendously crafted work. But there remain other opportunities for fans to engage with the franchise, including many spin-off stories, video games, and feature films. My Hero Academia: You’re Next is the fourth feature adaptation and, no, the subtitle does not mean this is a remake of Adam Wingard’s home-invasion horror film.

The title instead references a key moment in the series, where the number one hero All Might concluded a key battle by passing the torch onto the next generation, saying that it was their turn to become the symbol of hope within this hero-centric society. Many of the series’ characters saw that impactful moment, and it was also watched by a mysterious figure who took the words in the wrong way. The scene drives him to weaponize power to make himself into the new symbol, utilizing his crime organization to force his will upon unsuspecting people. He also takes on a moniker to highlight his intentions; Dark Might.

As marketing ramps up for James Gunn’s new Superman film, each announcement appears to tap into the character’s humanity and kindness that has felt absent on the big screen for a while. A subsection of Zack Snyder fans have reacted negatively, decrying key aspects of the character which do not fit their preferred grimdark version. As this vocal minority disregard kindness in favour of destructive power, it is interesting to see those views reflected in Dark Might, the antagonist who bastardizes All Might’s views with a belief that power and strength are the only ways to achieve greatness. One wonders if he was moments away from snapping somebody’s neck.

To protect the legacy of their teacher and idol, Class 1-A fight to stop Dark Might’s plans. While there is time for characters and relationships to shine through in little ways, the sheer amount of characters does leave many favourites sidelined. Additional focus is given to new character Giulio, a motorcycle-riding butler who is determined to rescue his employer’s daughter who has been kidnapped by Dark Might’s crime family.

What unfolds is an engrossing and exciting tale, effectively utilizing the show’s strengths while showing how far these characters have come. The animation is terrific to behold on the big screen, particularly when it realizes the battles in such thrilling ways. The only issue involves the use of CG animation, which becomes distracting whenever the motorcycle is shown in motion, although these are momentary instances. My Hero Academia: You’re Next is an entertaining tale that will reward fans of the series, and additionally delivers a killer tune from Vaundy.
