Frightfest 2024: ‘The Daemon’ Review
Stars: Adriana Isabel, Tyler Q Rosen, Sara Fletcher, Oscar Wilson, Nick Searcy, Mario Daggett, David McClain Jr. | Written and Directed by Matt Devino, David Michael Yohe

The Daemon is a psychological horror film that delves deep into cosmic terror, exploring themes of generational trauma, madness, and the thin boundary between reality and the supernatural.
Directed by Matt Devino and David Michael Yohe, the film follows Tom, played by Tyler Q. Rosen, who is haunted by the trauma of his father’s suicide. Tom retreats to the lakeside cottage where his father died, only to encounter a malevolent entity lurking in the lake’s depths. As Tom descends into madness, his wife Kathy, along with her brother Mark and his wife Jess, attempt to rescue him, unaware of the ancient evil they are up against.
The film’s atmosphere is saturated with Lovecraftian horror, focusing on the psychological unraveling of its characters rather than relying on conventional jump scares. The Daemon also explores some really heavy themes, such as the impact of past traumas on the present, and the terrifying possibility that human resilience can’t cope with outside, though in this case cosmic, forces.
These elements, combined with its chilling lakeside setting and strong performances from the cast, including Nick Searcy as Elliot and Sara Fletcher as Kathy, elevate The Daemon beyond standard horror fare, making it both a thought-provoking AND unsettling experience.
Says Devino and Yohe:
The Daemon is a reflection of our own fears, an exploration of the profound connection between past and present, and the acknowledgment that in the face of cosmic forces hope may not be enough to save us. We believe that the film will resonate with viewers on a visceral level, drawing them into a world where the line between reality and the supernatural is blurred, and where the strength of the human spirit is put to the ultimate test.
If you appreciate horror that challenges the boundaries of reality, delves into the psyche, is packed with atmospheric tension and has a true psychological depth, then The Daemon is a must-watch.
