‘AEW: Collision’ Review (Jul 13th 2024)

Welcome to this week’s review of AEW’s latest television show, Collision, which brings wrestling back to Saturday nights! We’ve got the commentary team of Tony Schiavone and Nigel McGuinness calling the action, so let’s get into the review!

Match #1: Konosuke Takeshita def. “Dynamite Kid” Tommy Billington

Takeshita shoved Billington to the mat. Takeshita booted Billington in the head, but Billington charged back with a shoulder tackle. Billington dropkicked Takeshita. Billington tried his luck again, but Takeshita dodged the second dropkick attempt from Billington. Billington tried for a running crossbody and both men spilled to the arena floor. Billington body slammed Takeshita on the arena floor. Billington climbed to the top turnbuckle, but Takeshita knocked Billington down and then blasted Billington with a brainbuster from the top rope. Takeshita and Billington traded forearms strikes. Takeshita whipped Billington into the steel ring post. Billington managed to get to his feet and jumped off the top with a crossbody to Takeshita on the floor. Billington climbed back up and nailed Takeshita with a shotgun dropkick! Tommy took down Takeshita with a snap suplex. Tommy Billington climbed up for a diving headbutt but Takeshita powerslammed Billington halfway across the ring. Takeshita tried for a tombstone, but Tommy reversed it and spiked Takeshita. Tommy climbed the top rope and went for the diving headbutt, but Takeshita dodged it. Takeshita planted Billington with a blue thunder bomb, but Billington kicked out at the two-count! Takeshita cracked Tommy with a running lariat. Takeshita hit the T-Trigger knee strike and pinned Billington!

Match #2: The Gunns (Austin & Colten Gunn) and Juice Robinson def. Michael Allen Richard Clark, Shaun Moore & London Lightning

Shaun Moore was tripled teamed by the Gunns and Juice. Michael Allen Richard Clark grabbed a tag, but the Bang Bang Gang got the best of him. London Lightning ran in, and Juice jabbed away at him. The Gunns blasted Michael Allen Richard Clark with 3:10 to Yuma and scored the pin!

Match #3: Roderick Strong def. Dalton Castle

Dalton grappled Roderick to the mat. Roderick cracked Dalton with a kick to the bridge of the nose. Dalton fired back with a running knee strike to Roderick. Roderick suplexed Dalton onto the edge of the steel ring barricade. Roddy dished out a dropkick to Dalton. Roddy chopped Dalton. Dalton blocked a kick and countered with a suplex to Roddy. Dalton smashed Roddy with a running knee. Dalton face planted Roderick in the ring for a near fall. Dalton worked over Roddy’s rib cage. Dalton tossed Roddy with two suplexes. Dalton ran toward Roddy with a knee strike but Roddy dodged Dalton. Dalton’s momentum carried him over the top rope. Roddy dropped Dalton with a suplex on the ring apron. Dalton went for the Bang a Rang but Roddy escaped. Dalton tried again but Roddy escaped again and smashed Dalton with a flash knee strike on the jaw for the pin!

Match #4: Nyla Rose def. Ava Lawless

Ava battered Nyle with hellacious forearms. Nyla fired back with a brutal chokeslam! Nyla splashed Ava in the turnbuckles. Nyla followed up with a vertical suplex. Nyla cracked Ava with a thrust kick. Nyla annihilated Ava with the Beast Bomb and pinned Ava!

Match #5: Top Flight (Dante & Darius Martin) def. Shane Taylor Promotions (Lee Moriarty & Anthony Ogogo)

Lee and Dante chain wrestled, showing off their technique at the start of the match. Lee Moriarty got the upper hand until Dante rolled up Lee for a two-count. Darius tagged in but Lee shoved him into the corner where Anthony Ogogo tagged himself in. Ogogo rammed Darius in the abdomen with his stomach. Top Flight employed quick tags to use tandem offense on Ogogo. Dante rocked Ogogo with forearm shots to the head. Ogogo ducked a kick but missed a running tackle. Dante connected with a crossbody press for a two-count. Ogogo knocked Dante out of the ring. Darius dazed Ogogo with a kick. Lee came in and hit a combination slam on Darius for a near fall. Shane Taylor hooked Darius’ foot and tripped him. Action Andretti jumped off the top of the ring post and splashed Taylor. Darius face planted Moriarty and pinned him!

Match #6: Skye Blue def. Harley Cameron

Harley splashed Skye in the corner. Skye charged at Harley, but Harley countered with a kick and then a running clothesline. Harley dropped hammer and anvil strikes on Skye Blue. Skye Blue retaliated with a running boot to Cameron, knocking Cameron to the arena floor. Saraya distracted Skye and then Harley blindsided Skye with a Russian Leg Sweep. Skye blasted Harley with a shotgun dropkick. Skye nailed Cameron with a twisting neck breaker. Cameron came back with a jaw breaker to Skye Blue for a near fall. Cameron charged at Skye with a running knee strike, but Skye Blue kicked out at the two-count. Blue planted Harley with a crucifix bomb and then forced Harley to tap out!

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #7: The Undisputed Kingdom (Mike Bennett & Matt Taven) def. The Conglomeration (Orange Cassidy & Kyle O’Reilly)

Neither Bennett nor Taven wanted to fight Kyle, arguing outside the ring. Orange rocketed outside with a tope suicida and wiped out the Undisputed Kingdom, taking the fight to them. Orange back body dropped Taven. Kyle walked up behind Bennett and walloped him with round kicks. Taven jumped in but Kyle blocked a leg sweep until Taven raked Kyle in the eyes. Orange smashed Taven with a Stun Dog Millionaire. Kyle put Bennett in an ankle lock until Bennett forced Kyle into a kick from Taven. Kyle put a rear naked choke on Bennett until Taven jumped in with a sick kick to Kyle! Taven ate a knee from Kyle. Kyle retaliated with a come back lariat on the Undisputed Kingdom. The Undisputed Kingdom double teamed Orange Cassidy in their corner. Orange crawled over to Kyle and made the tag! Kyle O’Reilly cleaned house on the Undisputed Kingdom! Kyle used a dragon screw leg whip and took down both Taven and Bennett! Kyle locked on an arm bar on Bennett, but Taven kicked Kyle, allowing Mike to escape. Kyle locked a guillotine on Bennett, but Taven nailed Kyle with a springboard kick to Kyle! The Undisputed cracked Kyle with the Neck Check! Orange tagged in and spiked Bennett with a spinning DDT! Orange went for the Orange Punch, but Mike Bennett stunned Orange with a punch. Orange managed to plant Bennett with the Beach Break! Kyle tagged in but Roderick Strong marched down and jumped on the ring apron. Ishii appeared out of nowhere and pulled Roddy down from the apron! Trent Berretta ambushed Orange Cassidy outside the ring. Kyle and Bennett slugged it out until Kyle put Bennett in an arm bar! Taven dropped a frog splash on Kyle. The Undisputed Kingdom spiked Kyle with a piledriver and Taven picked up the pinfall victory for his team!

News of the Night:

  1. AEW “authority figure” Christopher Daniels stripped the Bang Bang Gang of the Trios titles.

Final Verdict: 3/5

Not as good as last week’s Collision, that’s for sure but we did get two VERY solid matches in the opening and closing moments of the show. Everything in between was okay but I could’ve done without the squash matches (as per usual). Though I do hope Nyla’s squash victory – putting her at 60 straight wins – actually leads to something for the AEW women’s division veteran.
