How to overcome Red Dead Redemption II’s most fiendish quests

by James Smith

Red Dead Redemption II was released back in 2018 but it’s still a firm favorite in the gaming library of many. The never before seen open-world format in which you could scale every mountain and chase every sunset enabled a level of exploration that other video games could never have dreamed of. The realism of the graphics – sunlight catching on a cowboy’s stubble, rain dripping from a leaf into the river – made the game feel like an actual real world. Of course, there was a whole lot more to the game than just exploring; there were also a bunch of side quests that made this game just as fiddly as it was impressive to look at. We’re going to take a look at the quests, missions, and challenges that really had us scratching our heads during the first playthrough.

American Dreams

One of the first challenges that you’ll face in the game is a side quest that’s so confusing many of us don’t even manage to start it. You’ll be traveling between the camp and the town of Valentine in the early game, and you’ll stumble across a truly awful scene. Lying under a train track bridge you’ll find the mangled body of an unfortunate victim. If you stop to explore the body you’ll find a small piece of paper tucked inside its severed head, concealing a third of a hastily drawn map. You’ll need to find the two remaining parts of the map in order to find the serial killer’s hideout, which might be a little easier if there were literally any clues as to the whereabouts of the other map pieces. If you scour the entire map then you will eventually find the other pieces of the map alongside the bodies of two other unsuspecting victims. Put the map together and find your way to the killer’s lair for an encounter that you definitely won’t forget in a hurry.

A Test of Faith

Whilst some of the side quests, like American Dreams, are seriously gory, some of them are just incredibly time-consuming, A Test of Faith is one of those. This quest comes about when Arthur meets a lady called Deborah McGuiness, who has a passion for uncovering dinosaur bones. Unfortunately for Arthur, her passion doesn’t extend to actually finding the bones herself, so it falls to him to search them out. She tells Arthur that there are no less than thirty bones to find and gives him absolutely no clue as to the whereabouts of any of them. Thankfully you’re going to be spending a lot of time roaming the countryside anyway, but to stumble across thirty dinosaur bones is a tall order and one that’s going to take you a ridiculously long time. RockStar usually include a mission or two like this in their games, perhaps as some people enjoy that slower gaming style, or perhaps just to separate the wheat from the chaff and see who is really willing to put the time in.
