100 Word Hits – Comic Reviews #6

by Guest

Welcome to the sixth installment of our new column 100 Word Hits, in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us short, sharp reviews of the latest books to hit comic stores over the past month or so!

Little Monsters #5

Written by Jeff Lemire | Art by Dustin Nguyen

For some of the little monsters, their child-like naivety about life has been shattered. Ronnie has been killed by a human survivor who manages to flee into the woods. The rest of the group allow Laura to bury her father and bring her back into the city to show her their base. There’s more backstory, this time on Hiroshima survivor Yui, and a fleeting glimpse of another adult vampire, but where are they now? As dawn approaches the monsters needs to return to their lairs, but someone is awake and on the hunt for them!

Epic on every level!

Shang-Chi And The Ten Rings #1

Written by Gene Yuen Lang | Art by Marcus To

Clearly Shang-chi was a huge hit for Marvel, so much so that the comics have been re-aligned to mirror the cinematic version of the character. That’s no bad thing as this opening issue was as fun as the film.

Shang-chi holds the Ten Rings but Marvel’s villainous crime syndicates like A.I.M, and Hydra will stop at noting to possess them. Cue lots of insane fight scenes snappy dialogue as Shang-chi battles to keep the rings out of their clutches.

A great opener with an ending sure to bring you back for the second issue.

The Mandalorian #1

Written by Rodney Barnes | Art by Georges Jeanty

Being a huge fan of the show I was expecting further adventures in comic format of everyone’s new favourite Mandalorian. I clearly didn’t read the solicit information….. as this is essentially a comic adaptation of the first episode of Season 1.

There’s nothing wrong with this as the fans of the show will know the story and the art by Georges Jeanty is perfectly passable, plus in typical Marvel fashion there’s a bunch of decent variant covers. But those of you like me expecting new Mando adventures will be disappointed.

“You can go about your business. Move along! Move along!”
