‘The Quarry’ Review (PC)

For horror fans there is something fun about being in control of the victims of a horror game. Supermassive Games proved this well with Until Dawn. Now it’s time to collect another group of teens and stick them in a summer camp ready to be the victims. The question is will The Quarry be as fun as Until Dawn?
When all of the kids have left the camp at Hackett’s Quarry the only job now is to get the counsellors out of there. When the car won’t start though, much to the annoyance of the camp owner the teens have to stay another night. A night that ends up full of danger, terror, and potential terror unless you can help them survive it.
For fans of eighties horror the very fact that The Quarry takes place at a summer camp will have them looking for a Jason Voorhees type character, and the writers of the story of the game are fully aware of that. Thankfully though there is much more going on at Hackett’s Quarry to keep the player interested.
If you’ve played Until Dawn then you’ll know what to expect with The Quarry, the actions you choose and the quick time events you successfully manage to hit will decide the path the characters take. The way you make these choices does feel better in a way than Until Dawn, with Supermassive Games obviously making an attempt to improve the system, and it really is noticeable.
Another part of horror stories is the likeability of the characters themselves, you’ll hate some of them and feel you want them to die, or you’ll want a character to survive, and again this is done well. Another nice touch is some of the actors in the game. We’re looking at some horror favourites here with the likes of Ted Raimi, Lance Henriksen, Lin Shaye, and even David Arquette for the Scream fans. Again these actors are used well, especially Ted Raimi.
Once the game is completed there is the Movie Mode for players to mess around with. This gives them the chance to watch the game like a movie where you can view a version where everybody survives, or everybody dies, but maybe the more interesting is to mess with the characters themselves. You are able to choose the characteristics of the victims of the game to see what changes this will make to the story. It’s fun to play with and there are plenty of different endings to create. I will say though that the “movie” is long so it’s probably not going to be something you watch in one sitting.
The Quarry is a game that like Until Dawn brings back the fun of the choose your own adventure books and with a strong story full of mystery it keeps the player engrossed. Going into the game without spoilers is a wise choice so that you can enjoy the story, whether it be to kill everybody or keep them alive. If you are a fan of this type of game though you can’t go wrong with The Quarry with its mix of blood-soaked fun and adventure.
