‘AEW: Dark’ Review (June 7th 2022)

by Phil Wheat

Another episode of AEW: Dark and another short(er) show post-Double or Nothing. We get six matches this week, running SHORTER than last week’s four-match show… I guess we’re in for some squash matches? Let’s join Taz and Excalibur, commentators for Dark as usual, and see.

Match #1: Lance Archer vs. Aaron Solo

My Thoughts: What’s this? Solo doesn’t get thrown into the ring by Archer like most of his opponents AND he manages to almost pin Archer too! Solo sold a “fear” of Archer well, trying his best to get the match over with as soon as possible. Of course that wasn’t going to work and Archer took control and got the win.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #2: Christopher Daniels def. Steve Andrews

My Thoughts: Daniels gave Steve Andrews far too much room to get in his offence in this match. Far too much. This one was kept short though and Daniels looked good getting the win, so there’s that.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #3: Marina Shafir def. Skye Blue

My Thoughts: This was the women’s version of the opening Lance Archer match, with Skye Blue taking it to Marina Shafir and even getting a pin attempt. However, unlike Archer’s match Shafir took a pummeling from Blue, even looking flummoxed, before getting an INCREDIBLY quick win with a submission move and the tap out by Skye.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #4: Ortiz def. Serpentico

My Thoughts: Serpentico gets another solo outing, this time against Ortiz, in what was obviously part of the build for Ortiz prior to his “hair versus hair” match against Chris Jericho at Road Rager on June 15th. Though the fact Serpentico got in so much offence doesn’t bode well for Ortiz, especially against the more experienced Jericho.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: Toni Storm def. Zeda Zhang

My Thoughts: Well this was a great match, despite feeling far too short. Zhang was a great opponent for Storm, matching her in size, style and physicality. The crowd were more vocal in this match (and the match that followed) which added a lot to the show. I would have liked to see the duo go at it for longer but hey-ho, this week feels like and short, sharp shock of AEW matches not drawn out ACTUAL wrestling matches…

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #6: Max Caster & The Gunn Club def. Alex Reynolds, John Silver & 10

My Thoughts: Like the Toni Storm match, the crowd made this one all the more exciting. It helps that The Acclaimed get the crowd riled up each and every time! There was nothing special about this match but it was a crowd-pleaser. Literally. These two teams are definitely the favourites when it comes to Dark and Elevation so why not go with it?!

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5
