‘WWE NXT’ Review (Jun 6th 2023)
Welcome to this week’s review of NXT, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what happened this week…
Match #1: Ava, Rip Fowler & Jagger Reid def. Ivy Nile, Julius Creed & Brutus Creed
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Despite an incredible showing from Diamond Mine, the villainous Schism snuck out with a win in Six-Person Tag Team action. Early shows of strength from Diamond Mine were countered by sneaky tactics of Schism and when the action broke down, it favored the terrifying trio. Ivy Nile locked in a Dragon Sleeper on Ava, but Jagger Reid interfered, and the distraction caused the referee to not see Ava hit Nile with the signature mask of Schism and the sequence spelled doom for Diamond Mine.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5
Match #2: Blair Davenport def. Dani Palmer
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
After revealing herself as the masked attacker, Blair Davenport made a statement by destroying Dani Palmer in singles action. Davenport made an example out of Palmer and used her brutal offensive style to keep the athletic Palmer grounded. Davenport mercifully ended the match with her signature Falcon Arrow.
My Score: 2 out of 5
Match #3: Baron Corbin def. Trick Williams
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Carmelo Hayes’ hype man Trick Williams nobly stood up to Baron Corbin after a blindside attack last week, but it was Corbin who came out on top when the two met in a one-on-one match. Williams got the jump on Corbin early, but the veteran savviness of Corbin prevailed as he began to overwhelm his opponent. Corbin wisely began targeting Williams’ knee, and one final blow to it allowed him to hit an End of Days to give himself the win.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5
Match #4: Mustafa Ali def. Joe Gacy
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
“Free Agent Ali” does his thing by exacting some vengeance on the leader of Schism, Joe Gacy. Mustafa Ali had his hands full with Gacy, even getting hit with several crushing moves, including Gacy’s devastating Uranage. Ali righted the ship though and used his supreme athleticism to down Gacy long enough to hit an incredible 450 splash for the win.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5
Match #5: Eddy Thorpe def. Damon Kemp
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
“The Alpha Wolf” Eddy Thorpe defeated Damon Kemp but not without some controversy attached to it. Thorpe and Kemp were nearly equal throughout their matchup, but one pin attempt by Thorpe became a disaster for Kemp as despite his foot being on the rope, the official didn’t see it and finished his three count, handing Thorpe the win.
My Score: 2.5 out of 5
Match #6: SCRYPTS def. Dabba-Kato
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Dabba-Kato was manhandling the recently unmasked SCRYPTS, but an appearance by Axiom confused and disoriented the massive Superstar. The distraction by Axiom opened the door for SCRYPTS as he rolled up Dabba-Kato and stole a victory away from his much larger opponent.
My Score: 1 out of 5
Match #7: NXT Women’s Championship No. 1 Contender Battle Royal – Winner: Thea Hail
The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Chase U’s peppiest Superstar Thea Hail secured her spot as the No. 1 Contender to Tiffany Stratton by outlasting a host of other Superstars in a Battle Royal. The eliminations came fast and furious with Jacy Jayne, Cora Jade, Lyra Valkyria, and free agent Dana Brooke all looking strong early on. Blair Davenport came down to ringside and brawled with Roxanne Perez before she was eliminated. The final four seemingly came down to Jade, Brooke, Fallon Henley, and Kiana James, but Hail appeared and re-established herself in the match. Almost out of nowhere, Hail eliminated both Jade and Brooke to make herself No. 1 Contender.
My Score: 3 out of 5
Final Verdict: 2.5/5
Not as good as last week’s show, this week’s NXT should be commended for at least one thing… managing to get a good match out of Baron Corbin! Interesting to see WWE’s main roster stars turn up on NXT, though it does give them a better spotlight – case in point Mustapha Ali, who rang rings around Joe Gacy. Props must also go to the main event Battle Royal, which delivered a great multi-women match that felt like it actually meant something! Plus, we got THAT promo from Bron Breakker… Which could lead to something VERY interesting!
