Get Over Here! First Poster & Trailer for ‘Mortal Kombat II’

by Phil Wheat

Finish him? Not quite yet… but the hype train has well and truly left the station. New Line Cinema has dropped the first poster and trailer for Mortal Kombat II, the long-awaited follow-up to 2021’s bone-snapping reboot, and it looks set to crank the fatalities up to eleven.

This time around, Earthrealm’s champions are thrown headfirst into an all-out, no-holds-barred war against the looming threat of Shao Kahn. The stakes? Oh, just the total annihilation of Earthrealm. Standard Tuesday in the Mortal Kombat universe then.

Leading the charge – and stealing every scene he’s in if the trailer is anything to go by – is Karl Urban as Hollywood loudmouth-turned-reluctant-hero Johnny Cage. And honestly? It’s inspired casting. Urban looks like he was born to deliver Cage’s smug one-liners before roundhouse-kicking someone into the Netherrealm.

Returning to the fray are franchise favourites, including Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, and Lewis Tan, alongside heavy hitters like Hiroyuki Sanada returning as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion and Joe Taslim as Bi-Han. The ensemble also includes Tadanobu Asano reprising his role as Lord Raiden.

Behind the camera, Simon McQuoid returns to direct, with a screenplay from Jeremy Slater, based on the legendary video game franchise created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. If the trailer is any indication, expect bigger fights, nastier finishers, and a full embrace of the franchise’s gloriously gory legacy.

Mortal Kombat II slams into UK cinemas on 8th May 2026, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.

Until then? Watch the trailer below. Choose your fighter. And prepare for war.
