The legendary ‘House Party’ coming to the Criterion Collection

by Phil Wheat

Spirit Entertainment is turning February 2026 into a full-blown throwback celebration, as The Criterion Collection brings one of the greatest teen comedies of all time to the UK in glorious 4K: House Party.

Dropping February 2nd, Reginald Hudlin’s breakthrough feature gets the high-definition love it has always deserved. And look, as someone who grew up living this movie, wearing out my VHS copy, and absolutely attempting (with varying degrees of success) to recreate Kid ‘n Play’s legendary footwork in the living room, this release hits me right in the nostalgia.

Kid ‘n Play bring unstoppable charm to the screen as aspiring MCs gearing up for the party of all parties. When Kid’s dad (the late, great Robin Harris) shuts down his plans, Kid sneaks out anyway, setting off a night of rap battles, dance-offs, bullies, cops, and a little romance for good measure. With an incredible supporting cast including Tisha Campbell, AJ Johnson, Martin Lawrence, Daryl Chill Mitchell, and the Full Force crew, plus a soundtrack that defined an era, House Party remains a feel-good snapshot of early 1990s hip-hop culture that helped push Black teenage life into the mainstream. Decades later, it still absolutely slaps.
