‘WWE NXT’ Review (Jan 16th 2024)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this week’s review of NXT, right here on Nerdly. Let’s get straight into it and see what went down in this episode…

Match #1: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – Carmelo Hayes & Trick Williams def. Edris Enofé & Malik Blade

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Trick Melo Gang is on the same page as Trick Williams and Carmelo Hayes took down Edris Enofé and Malik Blade in the first round of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Trick and Melo came out hot, but the supreme athleticism of Blade and Enofé evened the playing field in a big way, highlighted by tandem splashes to the outside. Despite the incredible fight from Blade and Enofé, Trick Melo Gang took care of business and punched their ticket to the semifinals.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #2: Lyra Valkyria & Tatum Paxley def. Lola Vice & Elektra Lopez

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Despite giving off weird energy and freaking Lyra Valkyria out, Tatum Paxley proved to be a good partner for the NXT Women’s Champion as the pair picked up a major tag team victory over Lola Vice and Elektra Lopez. Vice and Lopez brought the Latina heat, but it was eventually extinguished thanks to a surprising sacrifice. Vice had the champion set up for a devastating spin kick, but Paxley pushed her out of the way and took the shot herself. Fortunately for them, her limp body fell on a downed Lopez and it resulted in a pinfall victory.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #3: Ridge Holland def. Joe Coffey

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Ridge Holland may have won the battle against Joe Coffey, but Gallus is winning the war. Holland and Coffey brutalized each other and in the end, a clothesline into a powerslam delivered Holland the win. However, after the match, Mark Coffey and Wolfgang hit the ring as Gallus battered a helpless and friendless Holland.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #4: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – LWO def. Chase U

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The downfall of Chase U continued as Duke Hudson and Riley Osborne fell in the Dusty Classic to Cruz Del Toro and Joaquin Wilde of the LWO. Joined by Zelina Vega, Del Toro and Wilde used their incredible athleticism to combat the power of Hudson, but they met their match in the high flying Osborne. Ultimately, Hudson didn’t realize Wilde was legal and that lapse allowed the LWO to rally for the major win and to send them to the semifinals.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Match #5: Dijak def. Trey Bearhill

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

With Joe Gacy on commentary, Dijak took out Trey Bearhill in the NXT newcomer’s debut, but the postmatch attack was just as noteworthy. Bearhill was more than game and took the fight right to the towering Dijak, but a huge boot from Dijak ended the match in quick fashion. After the match, Gacy launched an unhinged assault on Dijak and Lexis King appeared to do the same on Bearhill

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #6: Fatal 4-Way Finale Battle Royal – Winner: Roxanne Perez

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The No. 1 Contender to the NXT Women’s Championship is none other than The Prodigy as Roxanne Perez defeated 19 other Superstars to punch her ticket to Vengeance Day. After the field whittled down to just Perez, Fallon Henley, Kelani Jordan, and Kiana James, the match turned into a Fatal 4-Way Match and the stakes only became raised. A flurry of action cleared the ring leaving just Perez and Jordan in the ring with Perez hitting Pop Rox to punch her ticket to Vengeance Day.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 3.5/5

It’s got to be something when the “third” brand – typically referred to as the feeder brand for the main roster – manages to outdo said main roster, crapping over Raw this week, with some fantastic Dusty Classic action and a women’s battle royal main event that managed to do what many battle royals can’t these days… WORK! All in all a great week for NXT.
