Back This! – ‘Folie a Deux’ & ‘Never Have I Ever’

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to the latest edition of our regular crowdfunding feature here on Nerdly – Back This! – where we take a look at some of the cool content taking the crowdfunding route on sites such as Indiegogo, Greenlit and Kickstarter. This month we’re spotlighting not one but TWO fantastic film crowdfunding campaigns…

Folie à Deux (Madness by Two)

Folie à Deux is a neo-noir short film that aims to open up a discussion about men’s mental health. In this film, we follow Oliver, an overworked chef who turns to drugs and alcohol and drags his girlfriend Isabel down with him, turning a loving relationship into one of control and abuse. The short – which is a proof of concept for a feature film – comes from writer/director Naveed Mir and stars Alan Cooper, who was the lead actor in the feature film Claudia.

What’s the crowdfunding for?

Most of the funds secured through the crowdfunding campaign will go towards the cast and crew to pay them the London Living Wage, along with paying travel and food expenses. Of course, campaign funds will also go toward paying for equipment, hair/makeup, costumes, production design, and post-production.

What are the rewards?

Rewards include social media shout-outs, digital posters and scripts and a top tier of Associate Producer credit on the film. To find out more information about the film and the campaign visit the official crowdfunding page on Greenlit.

Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever is the debut feature from award-winning writer/director Damon Rickard. He has been making short genre films – including The Package and The Tour – for a number of years which have done the festival circuits including prestigious genre festivals such as FrightFest, Screamfest, Telluride and Monster Fest. The filmmakers promise that the film will be a character-driven thriller/horror that will keep the audience guessing as to where it’s going right up to the shocking end.

The film is set to star Andrew Lee Potts (Band of Brothers, Primeval, The Crown), Beatrice Fletcher (Croc!, Wrath of Van Helsing), Amber Doig-Thorne (Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey, Return of Krampus), Tony Sands (Echoes of the Passed, Nefarious) and one of Nerdly writer/podcaster Kev’s personal faves, Johnny Vivash (Book of Monsters, Walking Against the Rain).

What’s the crowdfunding for?

The crowdfunding total of £25,000 is the absolute minimum Never Have I Ever can be shot for, which means the more funding, the more that Rickard and co. can put on the screen and invest into the film – such as more kit, more costumes, locations, props as well as possibly increasing the film’s crew size and even the potential to shoot extra scenes.

What are the rewards?

The rewards for this campaign include the usual social media shouts; special thanks; merch – including Blu-rays, t-shirts and more; TONS of behind-the-scenes perks; special screenings; as well as Associate and Executive Producer perks for those with deeper pockets. To find out more information about the film and the campaign visit the official crowdfunding page on Kickstarter.
