Friday Night Smackdown – Aug 18th 2023: Results & Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this past Friday’s episode of Friday Night Smackdown, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s episode!

Match #1: Austin Theory def. LA Knight

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Austin Theory became the No. 1 Contender to the United States Championship after The Miz showed up to Friday Night SmackDown and cost LA Knight the match. Knight was on a mission to prove a point, especially with The Miz at ringside, as he bashed Theory’s face on the announce table right in front of The A-Lister. Sick and tired of Knight’s success, The Miz hopped off of commentary, and his distraction allowed Theory to roll up Knight and win the match, securing his championship opportunity.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #2: Asuka & Charlotte Flair def. Bayley & IYO SKY

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The Queen and The EST proved to be a formidable duo as Charlotte Flair and Bianca Belair teamed up to defeat Bayley and WWE Women’s Champion IYO SKY of Damage CTRL. Flair and Belair looked sharp early, but a dropkick to the back of Belair’s leg and Flair awkwardly landing on her ankle stunted the momentum that the two Superstars had built. After absorbing the brunt of a beatdown, Flair finally managed to tag in Belair, and a K.O.D. was enough to end the match.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #3: The Street Profits def. The O.C.

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The new-look Street Profits sent another statement as they took down Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows of The O.C. Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins looked completely rejuvenated as they used their blend of power and speed to win the match, highlighted by a scintillating sit-out powerbomb/neckbreaker combo.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: Edge def. Sheamus

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

“The Rated-R Superstar” Edge celebrated his 25th anniversary in WWE in style as he defeated Sheamus in a thrilling matchup in front of Edge’s hometown of Toronto. Edge specifically chose Sheamus for this opportunity as the two Superstars had never faced off before this matchup, and they wasted no time engaging in what Sheamus calls “Fight Night.” Both Superstars dug deep as they battled inside the squared circle, with Edge kicking out of a thunderous Brogue Kick and Sheamus kicking out of a rib-cracking Spear. It was truly meant to be Edge’s night as he lined up The Celtic Warrior for one last Spear that gave him the victory on his special 25th anniversary.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 3.5/5

Whilst the card was short of matches, what this episode of Smackdown did was offer Edge a decent send-off and end with a pretty decent match between two veterans… in Edge’s hometown. A win-win for everyone methinks. And on top of that, we got a pretty good women’s tag match thrown into the mix too – which makes a change for the WWE IMHO. I don’t really care for Austin Theory or LA Knight so couldn’t get into their match but the fourth match on the card was more interesting – with the Street Profits showing off their new look and new edge. Though taking out Gallows and Anderson, who are getting on in years, isn’t THAT impressive.
