‘AEW Dark: Elevation – Episode 43’ Review

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this weeks review of AEW Dark: Elevation, the last of 2021(!) which emanated from the legendary Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. Let’s get right into the action!

Match #1: Dark Order’s Jon Silver, Alex Reynolds & Pres”10″ Vance def. Fodder, JR Miller & Brandon Scott

My Thoughts: Got to love a wrestler who calls himself Fodder – he certainly lived up, or should that be down?, to the name – getting beat down by an on-point Dark Order trios team that looked as lean and in-sync as any team could. Always great to see Silver. Reynolds and 10 do their triple team AND a combo finisher too! This was still a squash match though!

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #2: Thunder Rosa def. Dani Mo

My Thoughts: This was a total squash match, with Thunder Rosa demolishing Dani Mo, making her second appearance for AEW, whilst constantly focusing on Jade Cargill who was sat in on commentary.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #3: Anthony Ogogo def. Duncan Mitchell

My Thoughts: This was exactly the same as every Ogogo match we’ve had since his return to AEW. A squash. And one that’s supposed to make Ogogo look like a killing machine. The firt few times it did… Hey, at least these matches are letting Ogogo try out new moves – as he did here with his new “Tower of London” finisher.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #4: Santana & Ortiz def. Movie Myk & Alexander Moss

My Thoughts: Movie Myk and Alexander Moss got the jump on Santana and Ortiz before the bell and kept control… for about a minute! Showboating cost Myk and Moss as Santana and Ortiz took over and finished the duo in quick time! Quasi-squash-tastic!

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #5: Shawn Spears def. Lee Moriarty

My Thoughts: This was a solid match but its hard to get exciting about Shawn Spears’ matches these days unfortunately. He’s lost all momentum in AEW and I was, ultimately, surprised he won this one. Lee Moriarty looked better, wrestled better, antogonised better. He was just BETTER.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #6: Gunn Club (Colten, Austin, and Billy Gunn) def. Dark Order (Evil Uno, Stu Grayson, and Alan “5” Angels)

My Thoughts: Gunn Club winning over Dark Order? Nah I’m good. Gunn Club may have toned down the heel work but I still can’t get behind them. This should’ve been a clear win for the Dark Order trio. A complete travesty IMHO. It was a good match though.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #7: TayJay (Tay Conti and Anna Jay) def. Diamante and Emi Sakura

My Thoughts: Another solid match, one that saw TayJay give one of their best performances yet – no doubt thanks to having veterans like Diamante and Emi Sakura facing them. All four women worked well together, in particular Emi and Diamante – but then Emi Sakura seems to be able to work well with anyone! The surprising part of this match was Anna Jay submitting Diamante – shocker!

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #8: Matt Hardy def. Darius Lockhart

My Thoughts: Matt Hardy had the “hometown” advantage in this match, so Darius Lockhart had to play the villain here – which he did with aplomb, showboating and posing like the best heels. Odd seeing Hardy be the face and NOT play dirty after all this time as part of the HFO though…

My Score: 2 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

An average episode of Elevation that could’ve benefitted from less squash matches and more competitive action – nothing here created much excitement even though the wrestling was solid.
