‘AEW: Dark’ Review (Nov 9th 2021)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this review of this weeks episode of AEW: Dark, I’m editor Phil and this weeks episode of Dark is NOT from AEW Universal, instead this was filmed on the road in St. Louis and the larger crowd definitely makes a difference. Oh, and we’re back to nearly two hours of wrestling this week too!

Match #1: The Gunn Club def. Dark Order (Evil Uno, Alex Reynolds & Colt Cabana)

My Thoughts: You’ve got to feel sorry for the Dark Order having to give up a winning streak to the Gunn Club of all people. I have no idea why AEW is insisting on having Billy Gunn and his two sons have an undefeated streak – it’s not like they’re remarkable wrestlers, they personify the midcard/jobber role perfectly and Dark Order are way above that station; and they have great skills to back that up. Uno, Reynolds and Cabana made this match work. Seriously.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #2: Riho def. Heidi Howitzer

My Thoughts: Heidi Howitzer has a great look and she had a great show of strength AND attitude in this match. But we all knew Riho wasn;t losing this one and she didn’t… A diving foot stomp ended this one quite quickly once Howitzer missed a Vader Bomb. a typical Aew quasi-squash if ever there was one.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #3: Too Fast Too Fuego def. Nick Comoroto & Aaron Solo

My Thoughts: The ridiculous concept – featuring Cody Rhodes hiding under a singlet, lucha mask and concealer (for his tattoos) – continues and yes, it’s daft, it’s `very daft but its a hell of a lot of fun too; and the crowd here loved it too, cheering on the duo throughout this match. Comoroto and Solo made for great heels, as usual, too. But what I’ve loved about BOTH these matches is the fact they’ve made Fuego Del Sol look so much more than just the Tornado DDT.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #4: Sammy Guevara & Jake Hager def. Koko Lane & Luke Langley

My Thoughts: Sammy Guevara was the ring general in this one, controlling the match for the most part – eventually tagging in Hager to let him beat down their opponents too! Guevara eventually hit a senton to pick up the win… before the Men of Year rushed the ring and beat him down, with Santana & Ortiz running out for the save.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #5: Chuck Taylor, Orange Cassidy, & Wheeler Yuta def. Darian Bengston, Davey Vega, & Camaro Jackson

My Thoughts: This was a quick squash match by the Best Friends that didn’t do much other than give us more of Raven-esque Darian Bengston and a great show of strength from Camaro Jackson.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #6: Dante Martin def. Frankie Kazarian

My Thoughts: This was a good a match as you’d expect from the ever-excellent Dante Martin and veteran Frankie Kazarian. There was some nive storytelling, with Frankie Kazarian clearly having watched Martin’s previous matches and anticiopating his high-flying moves. And speaking of storytelling, I’m hoping the interference of Lio Rush, without Maritn’s knowledge is the start of a bigger story between the two. The seeds have been planted…

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #7: Thunder Rosa, Ryo Mizunami, & Kris Statlander def. Emi Sakura, Jamie Hayter, & Rebel

My Thoughts: I’ve decided I want Ryo Mizunami on EVERY show that AEW puts out… Elevation, Dark, Dynamite and Rampage. Her mannerisms and ractions add TONS to every match she is a part of. This match saw all the competitors get a chance to chien in the ring, with Jamie Hayter making the most of her time to show just how good she really is.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #8: Matt Sydal & Lee Moriarty def. 2point0

My Thoughts: This was a fantastic tag match, with Sydal putting in a tremendous performance. If Sydal & Lee Moriarty are this good going forward then we’ve got ANOTHER great team for AEW’s tag division. Sydal really looked on form in this one, hitting hard and hitting fast – with a performance that, honestly, looked like one of his best.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #9: Nyla Rose def. Tootie Lynn

My Thoughts: St. Louis native Tootie Lynn gets a second appearance on AEW programming and showed some of her skills yet again. Before Nyla Rose took her out that is… Another AEW quasi-squash.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #10: Andrade El Idolo def. Warhorse

My Thoughts: Speaking of squash matches, Whilst Warhorse got a great introduction that’s all he got in this match – unless you count his arse getting kicked!

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #11: Ricky Starks & Powerhouse Hobbs def. Alan Angels & Pres10 Vance

My Thoughts: So have Dark Order gone right back to losing all their matches now? That was the shortest winning streak in the history of AEW (I think). Ricky Starks talked sh*t whilst Hobbs kicked arse. 10 got a few good shots in but Starks and Hobbs had this one under control.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #12: Tay Conti def. Miranda Gordy

My Thoughts: Excalibur and Taz made lot of Miranda Gordy being the daughter of Terry Gordy only for her to get thoroughly demolished by Tay Conti in under a minute! In fact ot was a few pump kicks in the corners (Conti’s usual move) and a DD-Tay and it was all over!

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #12: Wardlow def. Ryan Mantell

My Thoughts: This was a super-traditional squash, with Wardlow making a mockery of Mantell, then Shawn Spears making a mockery of Wardlow’s win with an unnecessary post-match C4…

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #13: Luchasaurus, Jungle Boy, & Christian Cage def. Matt Hardy, Isiah Kassidy, and The Blade

My Thoughts: Christian Cage took a beating in this match, selling HFO’s assault well. Of course that means when Cage got the tag to Luchasaurus the crowd went wild as he beat down the HFO. Even tually the ring was cleared apart from Jungle Boy and the Blade and JB got Blade in the Snare Trap for the win. A great main event to a prtty decent, if long, episode of Dark.

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 3/5

A long episode of AEW: Dark this week and one that was doing great until the glut of squash matches took the show down a step. Thankfully there was plenty of variety to keep the audience interested and some great performances from the AEW regulars.
