‘AEW: Dark’ Review (July 27th 2021)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this weeks review of AEW: Dark, which is the 99th episode of AEW’s first YouTube show. Apparently next week is going to be a special 100th episode but for now lets get to this weeks show – which is a mere 45 minutes like last weeks episode!

Match #1: Red Velvet def. Alejandra Lion

My Thoughts: The debuting Alejandra Lion had an interesting look and a hard-hitting style, as Excalibur said on commentary, which resemble an old Taz gimmick. In terms of wrestling, Lion brought it to Red Velvet hitting a nasty looking nail rake down Velvet’s back at one point. This one didn’t go on too long, with Red Velvet hitting her Final Slice finisher for the win.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #2: Abadon def. Killa Kate

My Thoughts: Another local wrestler working as enhancement talent, Killa Kate looked good in this match early doors, managing to out-move Abadon, staying out of her way (the first person to really do that if memory serves) even managing to get Abadon to smash into the turnbuckle after missing a charge. Eventually Abadon hit her finisher for the win at the 3 minute mark.

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #3: Diamante def. Big Swole

My Thoughts: This match has been building through promos and match interferences for a few weeks and hopefully this isn’t the final blow-off and we get more feuding between the two; especially given that the two work well together and their styles match up well. Plus Swole needs to get the big win over the cocky Diamante in front of a big Dynamte crowd IMHO.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: Evil Uno and Stu Grayson def. Zach Mason and Warren Johnson

My Thoughts: Evil Uno was very generous at the start of the match, letting Mason and Johnson (more local talent) get the upper hand against him. Once Stu Grayson got the tag this match was all the Dark Order – in, as they promised, a real showcase for what other AEW tag teams can expect from them in the future.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #5: Dante Martin and Varsity Blonds def. Ryan Nemeth and The Acclaimed

My Thoughts: My thoughts on this match? Just go and bloody watch it. Really. Dante Martin is in a class of his own. I think he’s more athletic than AJ Styles at his peak… and he’s only just getting started! Oh, and Max Caster’s pre-match rap was particularly on-point this week. Plus these guys got a good amount of time too!

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

Final Verdict: 3/5

Another short and sweet episode of AEW: Dark this week which is great to see. Only 5 mathces meant we also got some promos from some of the roster that weren’t on the card this week, furthering waht looks to be more long-term stoartelling for AEW. Which is more than welcome.
