The evolution of online casino gaming throughout the years

by James Smith

It’s hard to imagine playing online casino games without the input of the internet, and therefore the ability to play wherever or whenever you want. In an age where playing live casino games is the norm, it’s no wonder that visits to the classic brick-and-mortar casino locations have almost become a thing of the past. Now, there are no limits to your gaming experience and the future of online casinos is looking brighter than ever. But, how did it all begin? And how far has it come? Keep reading to find the answers.

Let’s take it back to the start

Historians estimate that the act of gambling, as an entertaining and social pastime, has been taking place since around 3000BC. However, at this time, the games were mostly focussed around bringing local people together in small groups to throw dice or play with cards, whilst placing small stakes on the outcome.

From this point onwards, casino games, as we know them today, continued to flourish and soon dedicated buildings began to be constructed in honour of these gaming sessions. In 1638, the first ever official casino was built in Venice, named the Casino di Venezia. In fact, you can still visit it today – although it’s definitely had a fair few face lifts to keep up to date with the latest trends.

By the 19th century, the concept of these gaming buildings made its way over to North America. To get around laws and regulations, casino lovers set up their gaming tables on riverboats and local bars, before the rules began to changed.

Fast forward to 1941, and Las Vegas welcomed the first ever resort style casino, similar to what we know and love today. This creation more or less begun the Sin City strip that Vegas has become known for.

The online phenomenon

The mid 1990s saw the introduction of online casinos hitting the scene, not long after the invention of the internet. The first online casino was launched by a development company called InterCasino, who are still one of the top providers within this competitive industry.

In order to stay at the top of their game, these online casinos had to create a way to keep players interested in their site, over any others. So, along came the introduction of promotional offers and bonus schemes to entice new players, and encourage the old and faithful ones to remain just that.

Taking the next step

As if things couldn’t get any better, along came the development of live casino software. With this, the excitement of playing in person could now be experienced in your very own home. At first, the technology wasn’t the greatest, as the games were filmed out of a real-life casino which led to players getting in the way of the camera and blocking the virtual players’ view. The games would be broadcasted one at a time, and for a maximum of three hours, meaning that the activity became time sensitive once more.

Thankfully, developers learnt their lesson and created dedicated studios for these live games. This allowed players to once again enjoy their games anytime, anywhere and, most importantly, live!
