‘AEW: Dark’ Review (May 25th 2021)

by Phil Wheat

Welcome to this weeks 90+ minutes of action (thats what it says on YouTube) on AEW: Dark. I don’t know what to expect this week given that AEW: Dynamite is moving to Friday nights for the forseeable – do we get more of the same, or can we expect some changes given the sweeping changes coming to AEW’s future? let’s find out…

Match #1: Nick Comoroto def. Duke Davis

My Thoughts: This match was over faster than the blink of an eye. Yet again Comoroto’s entrance, and the messing around with the ring steps, was longer than the actual match. What a waste of Comororto’s talent.

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #2: Aaron Solow def. Ganon Jones

My Thoughts: This match was almost over as quick as Solow’s Nightmare Factory team mates. The only hihgliht here was Taz’s rib on commentary that he’d mever seen a pedigree before!

My Score: 1 out of 5

Match #3: 10 def. Dillon McQueen

My Thoughts: Turns out Dillion McQueen is actually a pretty decent match for Dark Order’s 10, the two guys almost perfectly matched in size and weight – though it turned out 10 have more raw power than McQueen in the end!

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #4: Evil Uno & Colt Cabana def. Steven Andrews & Simon Lotto

My Thoughts: Another great match for Uno and Cabana, who actually make quite the team. Stu Grayson came out at the start of the match so its not like he wasn’t there, so why not team with his long time partner Evil Uno? Who knows, but what I do know is that if all THREE men came together as a Trios team they’d be lethal!

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #5: Big Swole & KiLynn King def. The Bunny & Madi Wrenkowski

My Thoughts: Two thirds of the Trios team of King, Swole and Velvet continue the momentum they’ve had for weeks now, defeating the Bunny and Madi Wrenkowski. The Bunny (Allie) was in partuclarly good form here both in terms of wrestling and character and Wrenkowski’s making improvements too!

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #6: The Gunn Club def. Kal Herro & Liam Gray

My Thoughts: A pretty generic Gunn Club match, even if they did try to sell Billy and Colten’s anger at their brothers situation. There were a few high spots – a huge drop kick by Colten and Liam Gray nearly knocking himself out in a suicide dive(!) but otherwise this was the usual from the Gunn Club.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #7: Leyla Hirsch def. Vertvixen

My Thoughts: I don’t know how much longer I can espouse the matches of Leyla Hirsch without sounding like a fan boy… but what the hell, this was ANOTHER great match from Hirsch and Vertvixen didn’t do too badly here either.

My Score: 2.5 out of 5

Match #8: Dante Martin def. Jason Hotch

My Thoughts: Another superb match from Dante Martin, at this rate he’ll be on the path to a singles championship before his brother gets back from injury! Though speaking of injury it looked like Dante took a serious hit from Hotch’s backbreaker… Damn that looked like it hurt for real. Eventually Martin recoevered and hit the 450 again for the win. Keep this up AEW!

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #9: Diamante def. Reka Tehaka

My Thoughts: This was an aggressive match between two hard-hitting women. Though there were a few slip-ups (especially that code red at the end), mainly due to how aggressive and fast-paced both women were!

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #10: Joey Janela def. Bear Bronson

My Thoughts: Bear Boulder is still injured and out of action so Bear Bronson is in singles competition and, much like Dante Martin, singles wrestling is actually working out well for Bronson – he put up some decent opposition on Brain Cage the other week and does the same here against Joey Janela. Oh… and what a punch by Bronson, driving Janela out of the ring, that sh*t looked vicious!

My Score: 3 out of 5

Match #11: Angelico def. Ryzin

My Thoughts: Honestly, I’d have loved to have seen Ryzin get the win here and for a second it looked like he would. Yes, my disdain for TH2 runs that deep… Half a point deducted from my score for Angelico appearing in this match. Yes it’s petty but this is my review!

My Score: 1.5 out of 5

Match #12: Julia Hart def. Tesha Price

My Thoughts: New minted Julia Hart, who’s now a part of the Varsity Blonds, gets her first singles win under her belt. And against a vicious looking Tesha Price, though Hart wasn’t too shabby either! The match was a little clumsy but that only down to inexperience. Still hart gets her first win and its about time.

My Score: 2 out of 5

Match #13: Brian Cage def. Sonny Kiss

My Thoughts: On paper this looked like a total mis-match and I expected Cage to wipe the floor with Kiss; but that was not the case and Sonny Kiss tried to out-wrestle Brian Cage but as his intro states, “No-one can stop the path of Cage” and that was the case tonight.

My Score: 3 out of 5

Final Verdict: 2.5/5

A surprisingly good – if still average – week for AEW: Dark, with only two real squash matches (makes a change) and some decent match-ups from the ever-reliable Dante Martin and KiLynn King/Big Swole… Nice to see Julia Hart pick up her first win too this week.
