Is Margot Robbie Set to Lead a Pirates of the Caribbean Reboot?

by James Smith

Margot Robbie is one of the hottest properties in Hollywood right now, with every studio, screenwriter, director and their dogs wanting to work with her. The 30-year-old Australian is at the peak of her powers, and has the ability to attract huge blockbuster audiences. With this in mind, there is nobody better suited to rebooting the fatigued Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Robbie is reportedly set to star in a spinoff film, entirely separate from the series that features Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. This could take the films in a new direction, and bring back a lot of fans who were left disheartened with the last instalment.

What is Happening With The Pirates Franchise?

The original Pirates of the Caribbean films formed a self-contained trilogy that went down well with audiences across the world. After At World’s End in 2007, there was a four-year hiatus before the series was continued in 2011 with On Stranger Tides. The picture grossed more than $1 billion at the box office, leading Walt Disney Studios to set about making another instalment. This was Dead Men Tell No Tales (also known as Salazar’s Revenge in some countries) in 2017, which was one of the least successful offerings in the series commercially and critically.

After the 2017 adventure, there was a general consensus that the series was going over familiar territory again. Even Depp’s popular pirate was becoming a bit dull and repetitive. Despite calls for a complete reboot of the franchise, the studio still appears to be planning to release a sixth film in the series.
However, the good news for a lot of fans is that there will also be a spinoff feature with Robbie at the helm. This will be a completely fresh take on the franchise, set in the same universe but with a brand-new direction. If the new offering is successful, it may lead the studio to put its old series to bed and focus solely on the Robbie-led franchise going forward.

High Demand for Female Pirates

Looking across mainstream media, there is high demand for female swashbucklers in film, games, and television. One of the most popular slot games listed at Happy Luke is Lady of The Ocean, a reel spinning adventure about a courageous female pirate. The site is listed as one of the top real money casinos, and offers other pirate games with female leads such as Pirates 2: Mutiny. New players at the site are able to claim a 200 per cent bonus if they go through the link provided on the review page.

Another recent example of a female pirate that went down well with viewers was Clara Paget’s portrayal of Anne Bonny in Black Sails. Bonny was one of the most popular characters in the Starz series that ran for four seasons between 2014 and 2017. There have been plenty of classic female pirates in games throughout history as well. Captain Scarlett in Borderlands 2, Elaine Marley in the Monkey Island series, and Risky Boots in the Shantae Series are all legendary characters. There is clearly a huge audience there, ready and waiting to see more women of piracy. This highlights how a new Pirates of the Caribbean film with Robbie at the helm has the potential to be the biggest blockbuster of the entire franchise.

Will This Be Robbie’s Most Iconic Role?

It should come as no surprise that Robbie is keen to take on the lead role in the new offshoot of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Cristina Hodson is set to write the screenplay, and she has already worked with Robbie on Birds of Prey in 2020. The biggest reason for Robbie, though, is the fact that it has the potential to be the most iconic role of her career. Some would argue that Depp’s turn in the franchise was his finest hour, and it may be the role that he is most remembered for. If Robbie can create an equally charismatic, scene-stealing character, she could go down in history for it.

It should be noted, though, that Robbie has already starred as a few amazing characters in her short career. For instance, the two-time Academy Award nominee has made the part of Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe her own, with some saying she was born for the part. She also received widespread recognition for her roles as Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, and Queen Elizabeth I in Mary Queen of Scots.

There is no set release date yet for the Pirates spinoff with Robbie at the helm, and pre-production hasn’t even started. However, it is exciting to think about the new possibilities for the franchise once it moves away from the existing characters. Although Sparrow was a fan favourite for many years, it may be time for him to hang up his pirate hat and let another take the wheel.
