Monopoly is Bigger Than You Think

by James Smith

Monopoly is just a boring family board game for a rainy afternoon, right? Wrong. Actually, Monopoly is much bigger than you probably expect. The history of the game can be traced back around 100 years, with Lizzie Magie’s The Landlord’s Game being its inspiration. Nowadays Monopoly is nothing short of a juggernaut, with keen players even able to take part in tournaments like the U.S. National Championship and the Monopoly World Championships. Here is how Monopoly became one of the biggest game brands in the world, up there with Game of Life.

Monopoly – a brief history

The Landlord’s Game was self-published in 1906 and paved the way for Monopoly to be developed as a top board game of the era. It took until the 1930s until a game bearing the name Monopoly was released, with Parker Brothers having purchased its copyright, as well as the rights to Magie’s patent. Atlantic City, New Jersey, was the first city to be used on the Monopoly board but now players can buy a board based on a huge array of locations all the way across the planet. Hasbro snapped up Parker Brothers at the start of the 1990s, acquiring the rights to Monopoly as a result of the deal. After this move, public input was sought to bring Monopoly into the modern era with more variations of the game duly created by Hasbro. Monopoly Here and Now is one of the most popular of the new Monopoly games that are out and the McDonald’s Monopoly game, while marred by scandal, is popular around the world.

Monopoly TV shows and films

Believe it or not, Monopoly has inspired a lot more than just video games. A film based on the game has been in development for more than a decade. It might seem far-fetched, but few people would have predicted a movie could be made out of Battleships – and yet it was. Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) was once attached to direct Universal Pictures’ planned film version of Monopoly but development was halted after a few years. Back in 1990, there was a Monopoly game show that ran briefly on ABC and Monopoly was a key part of Family Game Night with Todd Newton that was on TV in the early 1990s. Under the Boardwalk: The MONOPOLY Story, a fantastic documentary, won a series of prizes including regional Emmy Awards and the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2010 Anaheim International Film Festival.

Monopoly slot games

There are over 20 different slot games at online casinos with a Monopoly theme these days – and many of them are available for free on DogSlots. Among the very best of them are Monopoly On The Money, Monopoly Megaways and Monopoly Big Event, as well as Monopoly Millionaires and Epic Monopoly. These Monopoly slot games usually take the form of a normal casino game with Monopoly symbols, with the bonus game featuring the Monopoly board from the traditional game. Monopoly has even been turned into a game that can be played at the live casino, alongside classics such as baccarat, blackjack and roulette. No longer is Monopoly something that has to take all day to be played. These slots are ideal for a quick session at your favorite online casino.

Monopoly video games

As well as various slot games at online casinos, Monopoly video games can be played as well. Around 20 Monopoly video games have been released so far, with the first of them – Monopoly by Leisure Genius – put out all the way back in 1985. Games like Monopoly Star Wars, Monopoly Here and Now, and Monopoly for Nintendo Switch have since been released on to various consoles and gaming systems. New Monopoly games continue to be released with the Stadia version of the game put out in 2020, bringing the game on to yet another format.

The future of Monopoly

Sales of Monopoly board games are on the rise as a result of lockdowns caused by the coronavirus crisis, but video games and slot games are great alternatives to try out as well. Hasbro has already made a vast amount of money out of Monopoly, but fresh innovation is likely to be on the way. That long-mooted movie might even come out, so Monopoly seems certain to remain a family favorite for a long time to come in the future.
