‘AEW: Dynamite’ Review (Sept 30th 2020)

by Nathan Favel

Welcome to this week’s AEW: Dynamite review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and I like Ben Richards…one mean mutherfugger. Hey, do you like good matches with way too many promos surrounding them? You’re gonna love AEW! Well, we do have a World Title match tonight, so let’s see if it is a good one (kinda).

Match #1: Darby Allin def. Ricky Starks

My Opinion: 3.8 out of 5 – This was some fabulous wrestling that got cut off by an interference angle and going too short. That being said, there is so much breath-taking athleticism in here that you’ll go wild for much of this. Starks has a hell of a lot going for him, if this match is any indication. Starks is gonna be a ready for a World Title within a year if he keeps progressing like he is. Allin is a major star at this point, but still isn’t ready for World Title…yet. I’m ready for Gerald Ford falling down some stairs, but let’s not lose track of what we’re talking about…lamb guts. These two have quickly become the best pairing in AEW and I want this feud to continue, so we can get more matches like this one.

Match #2: FTR def. SCU – AEW World Tag Team Championship Match

My Opinion: 3.9 out of 5 – This was another fabulous match from both of these teams. These four had the instant, fluid chemistry that you’d want from a major prize fight. The minutia of the tag work was impeccable, which is some-thing to expect from these two teams. There’s so much going on here that you might get the whiplash from trying to follow it all, but that’s not a bad complaint, all things considered. FTR won and should have, but SCU winning wouldn’t have necessarily ruined anything, if you know what I mean. This was such easy viewing, like when Grandma goes wig-first down the cliff. O’DOYLE RULES! If you don’t like this match, then go f………uck yourself.

Match #3: Chris Jericho def. Isiah Kassidy

My Opinion: 3.5 out of 5 – This moved along really well and favored Jericho, but not at Isiah’s expense. Can you believe that Donald Trump is an ass-hole? Isiah did a good job hiding his limited technical abilities in the ring against one of the best technicians around. Magic 8 Balls will tell us that Jericho should win because…Ask Again Later! The match was fast and furious, like the people who watch those movies when they can’t get laid. The Fonz jumped a shark just to watch this match, so you gotta watch this too.

Match #4: Orange Cassidy def. #10

My Opinion: 2.3 out of 5 – This was a squash with some nice wrestling, but since it lasted for only a few minutes, you can just skip this shit.

Match #5: Britt Baker def. Red Velvet

My Opinion: 2.3 out of 5 – This was a long squash…so it sucked!

Match #6: (Main Event) Jon Moxley def. The Butcher – AEW World Title Match

My Opinion: 3.4 out of 5 – This was pretty good, with Jon carrying The Butcher to a passable match that picked-up in the last third. A lot of this was brawling or Jon selling, but that’s not a bad way to conduct a prize fight. This was better than every match ever wrestled…no it wasn’t. Samantha Bee is the kinda of person you can usually agree with and yet hate for having her head shoved so far up her ass that she might as well just huff shit…and this match was not bad. Jon felt like the glue that kept this match together and that is the mark of a great champion. I want The Butcher to get another shot at the gold at some point, but looking like he actually works at a butcher’s shop isn’t working for him. I wouldn’t mind seeing this again, but how about not announcing it at the last second.

News of The Night:

  1. Jon Moxley fights Lance Archer for the AEW World Title in two weeks.
  2. Chris Jericho Night happens next week, with these matches on the card:
Brian Cage vs. Will Hobbs – FTW World Title
Cody vs. Brodie Lee – Dog Collar Match For The TNT Title
  3. 3. MJF gave The Inner Circle jackets so he could get in the group.

Final Verdict: 3.4/5

This started off well, but it went down for the second half and only recovered near the end of the main event.
