Opinionated: Wrestling Can Make You Smile, Even In The Hardest of Times

by Chris Cummings

We all know that things are rough right now. Times are hard and the uncertainty and worry about the world we live in is just unbelievable. It’s often at times of difficulty that we turn to things that help us to escape for a while, and give us some sort of joy or happiness. Right now, if you’re a wrestling fan, then turning to “The Grapps” is one of those things that will bring that smile and joy we need.

Wrestling has always been a joyous thing in my life. When I broke my back and was laid up unable to move after spinal surgery for weeks… I had the people around me, and I had wrestling to keep me company too. It’s one of those things that really does present an escape, and… as cliche as it tends to be, the whole “putting a smile on people’s faces” thing that WWE promote is true. Sure, we might not always like the decisions they make, but fans of wrestling can positively say that there are moments, many of them, that have brought them great excitement and happiness over the years.

Hulk Hogan body-slamming the Eighth Wonder of the World, Andre the Giant, at WrestleMania 3. Bret “Hitman” Hart having a mat classic with Mr. Perfect at SummerSlam 91. British Bulldog winning the Intercontinental Title at Wembley Stadium after beating his brother-in-law Bret Hart, at the 92 SummerSlam. Steve Austin winning his first WWF World Title. The heel turn of Hulk Hogan in WCW. The classics between Flair and Steamboat. The wonderful “hard times” promo of “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. The rise of The Rock. The three-faces of Foley. The modern age of Women’s Wrestling and “that match” at NXT Brooklyn between Sasha Banks and Bayley. The series of modern classics between Ciampa and Gargano in NXT. The boyhood dream coming true, for Shawn Michaels, at WrestleMania 12. The Hart Foundation winning in glorious fashion in front of their home crowd at In Your House: Canadian Stampede. Tommy Dreamer painfully asking The Sandman for “another” hard shot with the Singapore Cane in ECW. The birth of AEW. The wonderful story-based bout between Cody and Dustin Rhodes. The rise of NXT. Daniel Bryan lifting the WWE Title at the close of WrestleMania 30 in front of a sea of rabid fans. I could go on, and on, and on.

There are countless moments of joy in our lives because of professional wrestling. Whether it’s the victory of our favourite wrestler, an interview or promo from someone in the ring that entertained us, a wonderful call from announcers like Jim Ross, Gordon Solie or Mauro Ranallo, a debut, a shocking return, an exciting storyline full of twists and turns. Wrestling is a wonderful thing.

So, at a time when things are so uncertain and life is hard, lean back on pro-wrestling, grab some of your tapes or DVDs off the shelves, log on to the numerous services from various promotions offering a variety of content, including WWE Network, and find some joy.

Be safe, be well, and keep on going!
