Friday Night Smackdown – Feb 14th 2020: Results & Review

by Nathan Favel

Welcome to this week’s Friday Night SmackDown review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have three f—— matches. That’s it. F—— Valentine’s Day. Enjoy your sex, because I have to review this s—. If Otis gets more action with Mandy Rose than I do from the wrestling here, then I’ll be so mad that I’ll…I’ll…punch that fat kid from “Ted”! Some-one has to go “Joan Crawford” on that f—–.

Match #1: Bayley def. Carmella – SmackDown Women’s Championship Match

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Tempers flared when Bayley interrupted Carmella’s appearance on “A Moment of Bliss,” and the two Superstars agreed to have their scheduled SmackDown Women’s Championship immediately. Toward the end of a heated title clash, Carmella charged Bayley in the center of the ring, only to be caught by the champion and nearly drive through the mat with the Bayley-to-Belly, but the challenger kicked out just in the nick of time. After winning a fist fight while perched across the turnbuckles, Carmella struck with a top-rope hurricanrana that resulted in the narrowest of two-counts. Moments later, Carmella trapped Bayley in the Code of Silence, but Bayley fought out of the maneuver and into a pinning combination before placing her feet on the ropes for the three-count and a controversial title retention.

My Opinion: 3.7 out of 5 – This was a very strong match that gave Carmella her best performance to date and Bayley her best in a while. I’m very glad that the bout turned out the way it did, because having a match on a holiday in the WWE is usually a death sentence for quality. Bayley carried Carmella all the way to the finish line and really helped her make the most of her shot at glory. Go watch this fight.

Match #2: Sheamus def. Shorty G & Apollo Crews

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

Shorty G attempted to come to Apollo Crews’ aid last week after Sheamus defeated him in one-on-one competition, but the results were less than ideal for Shorty G and Crews in a Handicap Match. Crews and Shorty G even unloaded on Sheamus with a flurry of punches before the bell and later had Sheamus reeling with an impressive double-team attack. Sheamus, however, leveled Shorty G with a Brogue Kick to knock him off the apron and followed up with another one to Crews to claim the win.

My Opinion: 2.7 out of 5 – This was pretty good for a short little thing. There were some nice moves and it all came together long enough to make me wish that this was gonna be more than just a squash.

Match #3: (Main Event) Roman Reigns & Daniel Bryan def. The Miz & John Morrison

The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

The Miz & John Morrison were incredibly chirpy in the leadup to this contest that saw Roman Reigns choose Daniel Bryan as his mystery tag team partner to take on The Miz & John Morrison. The antagonistic duo continued their antics, leading to a very riled up Reigns & Bryan coming out the gates hot as the contest began. After a sneaky tag late in the bout, Miz leveled The Big Dog with a Skull-Crushing Finale, but Bryan broke up the pinfall attempt. The A-Lister mocked Bryan’s “Yes!” chants, but he ran right into a Superman Punch, and Reigns followed up with a thunderous Spear for the 1-2-3.

My Opinion: 3.5 out of 5 – This was a fine main even that wasted a big tag team just to put over two guys who didn’t need to beat them (a longer, grander epic would have saved this from being a bad booking decision). The crowd really kept this thing afloat, but the wrestlers had such a frenetic fight that they were covered any-way.

News Of The Night:

  1. Hulk Hogan was interrupted by Bray Wyatt during his interview talking about the Bray/Goldberg prize fight.
  2. Braun Strowman and Elias forcefully interrupted Sami Zayn’s protest concert.
  3. Dolph Ziggler ruined Otis and Mandy Rose’s Valentine’s Day date to start a feud between the two guys.
  4. King Corbin attacked Roman Reigns after he and Daniel Bryan beat The Miz and John Morrison.
  5. Bayley will defend the SmackDown Women’s Title at Super ShowDown, which is the first title match in women’s history (for Saudi Arabia).
  6. John Cena will be here in two weeks.

Final Verdict: 3.3/5

There were two longer matches that made this more than a two some-thing, but that’s me being very generous as well.
