CM Punk among bookmakers’ favourites to win the 2020 Royal Rumble

by James Smith

Royal Rumble 2020 is on the horizon, which means we are closing in on WrestleMania season and WWE are set to commence all of the key storylines heading into the company’s showcase event. It is never too early for fans to start predicting the WrestleMania card. In some cases, it can appear obvious for a long time the direction in which WWE are moving in, as they push various characters and lay down the groundwork by building up superstars and setting them on a collision course.

Brock Lesnar currently holds the WWE Championship, and could be set for another match with UFC legend Cain Velasquez who he defeated at Crown Jewel, or even Tyson Fury, the heavyweight boxer who also appeared in Saudi Arabia.

With Lesnar possibly involved in a crossover bout which WWE are never shy of putting on, plans for Universal Champion Bray Wyatt should be more straightforward, with Roman Reigns a strong candidate to headline alongside The Fiend.

There is a possibility that one or both of the titles could change hands before WrestleMania, and we could even see Reigns take on former Shield teammate Seth Rollins, or perhaps Braun Strowman.

Last year’s WrestleMania was main-evented by female competitors for the first time, and with Ronda Rousey the bookmakers’ favourite to win the women’s Royal Rumble, she could be in line to face Becky Lynch who has held the Raw Women’s Championship since their history-making triple threat with Charlotte Flair in April.

Smackdown Women’s Champion, Bayley, will also be involved in a high-profile contest if she keeps hold of the belt and is booked to defend it in Tampa Bay.

The Royal Rumble is the first step on the road to ‘Mania, and a number of sportsbooks listed on My Betting Sites Canada are taking bets on the men’s winner and the women’s winner.

CM Punk’s return to wrestling television came as a hugely pleasant surprise to fans, and even though he is working with FOX rather than with WWE directly, he is still joint-favourite with William Hill to win the men’s Royal Rumble with odds of +450.

Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns are also priced at +450, with Daniel Bryan (+800), Bray Wyatt (+1000) and Finn Balor (+1000) also in the mix.

Some potential value bets include Braun Strowman (+1600), Samoa Joe (+2500), and Lars Sullivan (+3300). Last year’s victor, Seth Rollins, is listed at +2500.

The biggest stars of yesteryear such as The Rock (+2000), John Cena (+2500), Edge (+3300), Undertaker (+3300) and Triple H (+5000) are available to bet on, but all perhaps more of a romantic wager than a sensible one.

What would previously have been regarded as a novelty bet on Cain Velasquez (+1200) or Tyson Fury (+2500) has to be taken somewhat seriously this year. Conor McGregor is also in there at +4000 but the Irishman is set for a UFC return in January.

Fellow UFC alumni Ronda Rousey (+300) leads the way in the women’s stakes, with Shayna Baszler (+600), Charlotte Flair (+700), Kairi Sane (+800) and Sasha Banks (+1000) among the contenders.
