‘AAA Invading NY’ PPV Review

by Nathan Favel

Welcome to AAA Invading NY, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and this is AAA Wrestling’s first Madison Square Garden show, despite moving to a smaller location in the Hulu Theater. Impact Wrestling has their roster here as well, so that means Impact got to Madison Square garden as well. This is a big night, so let’s see how this goes.

AAA-Impact-Header

Match #1: Mascarita Dorada & Chris Dickinson defeated Dave the Clown & Demus

My Opinion: 2.6 out of 5 – This had some nice action sequences, but it was a match that mostly felt like it was around to give Dorada some-thing to do.

Match #2: Team Impact (Josh Alexander, Michael Elgin & Sami Callihan) defeated Team AAA (Murder Clown, Drago & Faby Apache) – Trios Match

My Opinion: 3.3 out of 5 – This was spot after spot of mayhem and it made for a very fun, psychotic way to spend a few minutes of the day.

Match #3: Daga defeated Puma King, Flamita and Aerostar – Fatal 4 Way Match For A AAA Cruiserweight Championship Shot

My Opinion: 3.3 out of 5 – This was all spots and chaos, but it all looked really good. Daga seems to be picking up a lot of steam lately, so maybe him winning is the best way to go. That being said, any of these four could have won and felt appropriate. This was a blast, if not a very smart one.

Match #4: Taya Valkyrie defeated Tessa Blanchard – Reina de Reinas Championship

My Opinion: 3.5 out of 5 – This was a strong match that was fiercely wrestled by two of the best women in wrestling. Also, Tessa is one of the best in all of wrestling, so this match had the benefit of being in her very capable hands. This was really good.

Match #5: Lucha Brothers (Pentagon Jr. & Fenix) defeated LAX (Ortiz & Santana) – AAA World Tag Team Championship Match

My Opinion: 3.8 out of 5 – This was a spectacle of the first order. Kylo Ren is a Darth Vader rip-off. I’ve seen your mind and it was stupid! These two teams have as much chemistry together as ebony and The Rescuers Down Under. This match was definitely a bout of smart wrestling, but it went for insanity at any chance. I pissed myself a couple of times. Enjoy!

Match #6: Cain Velasquez, Psycho Clown & Brian Cage defeated Los Mercenarios (Texano Jr., Taurus & Rey Escorpion) – No Disqualification Trios Match

My Opinion: 3.8 out of 5 – This was some great stuff. Everybody looked fantastic here, but Cain looked incredible, especially for his second match. Cain did his MMA moves and lucha libre. Holy Toledo! That’s amazing! The drug war has been a waste of time. Who would have thought that Cain would be the best part of a match featuring so many talented athletes? They should hire Salma Hayek to narrate Hooked On Phonics. I’m glad I’m making so much sense.

Match #7: (Main Event) Dr. Wagner Jr. defeated Blue Demon Jr.

My Opinion: 2.9 out of 5 – This was a slow, decent match that felt like a pale imitation of much better matches these two have had against each other. It’s a shame that this didn’t measure up to previous matches from these guys history, but that happens some-times. Hey, they main evented a show in Madison Square Garden and that’s an accomplishment worth remembering.

Final Verdict: 3.4/5

This was a good debut at Madison Square garden for both of these leagues, with some fine action and the rise to prominence of Cain Velasquez.
