The Last Week In Wrestling #36 (Wrestling Round-Up)

by Nathan Favel

Welcome to this edition of The Last Week In Wrestling, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have another week to get to, so let’s make like Pennywise the Dancing Clown and place 2nd in the NCAA HeavyWeight Title tournament. Hey, I never said I was funny…just a moron.

Best Promo:

King Corbin, Lord Of The Ring (WWE) – Baron Corbin cut a hell of a promo on any-one he thought doubted his ability to become the King Of The Ring. The man may not be a great wrestler, but he is getting mic skills like I can’t even believe.

Best Moment:

…And The Ground Shook… (All Elite Wrestling) – Arn Anderson gave Tully Blanchard a Spine-Buster so perfect it made the crowd erupt in praise. If Arn could still wrestle, he’d be in every marquee bout for the rest of the year, at least.

Best Move:

Spine-Buster (All Elite Wrestling) – Arn Anderson did the damn Spine-Buster and got the whole business to revolve around him like never before in his career. If you haven’t seen the footage, then watch it and you’ll see what I mean.

Best Personality:

Tully Blanchard (All Elite Wrestling) – Tully was in Shawn Spears’s corner at All Out and made for one of the best managers in a long time. If Tully wants you to hate him, then you will.

Best Character:

Chris Jericho (All Elite Wrestling) – There are many reasons why Jericho own the AEW World Title, but his character is likely the best reason among the choices, due to how rich and detailed it’s become. Jericho has assembled a gimmick that allows him to play both sides of the field without having to commit to one or the other (even though he clearly likes heel better).

Best Performance:

Alex Shelley (Ring Of Honor) – This was a rerun of his match from Summer Supercard, but since this is what ROH played on ROH TV, it counts. Shelley was just too good here, displaying the kind of skill that only the best have.

Best Wrestler:

WALTER (WWE) – WALTER damn near killed Tyler Bate, who worked his ass off in one of the best matches of the year. WALTER is just too damn good to ignore, so he gets the award.

Best Card:

All Out (All Elite Wrestling) – AEW had a hell of a card in the books, with PAC versus Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho versus Adam Page for the AEW World Title, just to name a few.

Best Show:

NXT UK: TakeOver – Cardiff (WWE) – This was as sound a show as any this year, with the main event capping off a a night of great wrestling and no slack in any place that counted.

Best Match:

WALTER versus Tyler Bate – WWE United Kingdom Championship Match (WWE) – This was some-thing else. You gotta put this in with the all-time great bouts. Every-thing they did was exactly what it should have been. I say you can’t go wrong with this match.

Best League:

All Elite Wrestling – Well, I gave the pricks most of the awards, but I say they deserve to be seen as the league of the week, because they worked hard to make their plan effective for as many people as possible. That sounded dumb. All I’m saying is that this league was a big hit this week and they did well, even if they had their fair share of failures.
______

Final Verdict: 4.4/5

With numerous great matches and some fine booking, professional wrestling had a great week that makes it very easy to want to come back next week and see if we’ll get another one.
