Everything You Need to Know About ‘The Witcher’ TV Show

by James Smith

Netflix recently released promotional images for their adaptation of The Witcher, and now everyone can officially get pumped for it. The Witcher is based on the popular series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski, and the show is ran by Lauren S. Hissrich, most recently known for her work on Daredevil and The Umbrella Academy. With Hissrich’s experience in the speculative TV genre, she’s the perfect person to bring this dark and gritty work to life.

Henry Cavill looks great as the White Wolf, while other cast members including Freya Allan as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer also featured in the promos.

What is The Witcher About?

The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia, a sort of bounty hunter who is specially trained – and even mutated – to battle monsters and humans alike. The books are morally ambiguous and have complex character relationships and political intrigue. The video game adaptations are quite similar, with plenty of violence, self-motivated characters and moral consequences abound.

Many of the books and the most recent game center around Geralt’s protection of Ciri, portrayed in the forthcoming show by Freya Allen. Little is known about the plot of the show or how closely it’ll follow the book. However, according to The Verge, the author Andrzej Sapkowski is serving as a creative consultant.

Other Adaptations of The Witcher

The show launches in late 2019, when we’ll really get to see how the show comes together. Until then, there are plenty of other ways to satisfy your itch for all things The Witcher. For one, you could always read the books. They’re filled with horrifying creatures, even more horrible people, and a heavy dose of moral ambiguity. The first two books, The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, are short story collections and are the perfect way to ease into the series.

If you’ve been living under a rock, you could also give the games themselves a spin. The Witcher II: Assassins of Kings was one of the most technically advanced games of its time and distinguished CD Projekt RED as one of the top RPG developers around. The most recent release, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, was one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2015, if not all time.

If you’re really looking to dive down the rabbit hole though, you could also try and find the original film and TV show based on The Witcher. Both were called The Hexer in Poland, and both were directed by Marek Brodzki. Brodzki has worked for film and television for several decades and notably worked with Steven Spielberg on the film Schindler’s List.

Influence on other genres, from RPGs to casino gaming

If you need even more of a fantasy gaming fix from titles that have seen a touch of The Witcher‘s influence, there are plenty of other games to choose from. In the RPG genre, Monster Hunter: World is certainly worth your time, while you can even explore the genre through many fantasy-themed casino games. Sites like https://www.bobdealer.ca/ have reviews for dozens of online casinos and will let you know what games have the best bonuses and offers, with fantasy-themed slots like Double Dragons, Cloud Quest, and Warlords: Crystals of Power having all the monsters, magic and swashbuckling you could want.

With Game of Thrones sufficiently out of the way, many are eager to start a new fantasy adventure. Hopefully The Witcher will fill that need, which it appears to be on the path to doing. Until then, you can check out what else is coming to Netflix this month here at http://www.nerdly.co.uk.
